Did you know that by 2030, all packaging in the EU must be reusable or recyclable? As an Environmental Consultant at Ramboll, I work daily with EU legislation, including the newly adopted Regulation (EU) 2025/40 on Packaging and Packaging Waste (PPWR). Since its proposal by the European Commission in 2022, my team and I have closely followed its evolution.   The PPWR is a cornerstone of the EU’s efforts to make packaging more sustainable while supporting the European Green Deal and Circular Economy goals. It also aims to ensure the efficient functioning of the internal market through harmonized packaging rules.   Here are some of the regulation’s ambitious objectives: ✅ Recyclability for all packaging by 2030 ✅ Reduction and reuse targets ✅ Design measures, including recycled content requirements and restrictions on substances of concern   The carousel below highlights some of the key targets and implications. Looking forward to this Bureau of International Recycling panel next week, where I will focus on the strategic role U.S. recyclers play in critical mineral and material markets and how the U.S. government is addressing some of these crucial issues and challenges as decarbonization accelerates.
