I have worked in the entertainment industry for close to three decades. What we are experiencing now in the industry got started long ago and left unchecked will only get worse for those working and looking to work in it. Unfortunately profits and quarterly earnings are more important then people’s lives. It makes me ill to hear about my fellow artists loosing their homes or going into debt because they can’t pay their bills. I have recently been taking jobs outside of the industry just to make ends meet. For as long as I have been in the business there has always been an us vs them attitude between the production side and the creative side of the industry. They simple can’t stand for us to make wages that encroach on their slice of the pie. It’s ok for them to reap ginormous salaries that could feed a small country and garner golden parachute paychecks when things to workout but when the artist begins to elevate and succeed they simply cant stand it and they are subsequently outed, released as rabble rousers and trouble makers. Effectively exiled because they won’t play by the rules. Now with the assistance of AI these greedy contemptuous clowns in their board rooms and investment offices have it within their power to control the creative environment like never before. They can effectively eliminate the need for many of the creative individuals that make and produce the content you see. And control the work force that makes it happen. We are beggars at our on banquet. Until we truly become one voice and take back the power we have as creators and visionaries we will accept the crumbs off the corporate bagel table thinking we’re so fortunate and lucky to be in the room. And while I am beyond grateful for being able to do what I love as an artist in this business I won’t be placated, patted on the head and told to go sit down and accept this as normal because it’s far from normal and closer still to criminal. It’s time for the artist of every ilk to rise and say enough. We need to start organizing and using our collective creativity and talents to build a new model, one that envisions studios and business that focus on profit sharing for those artist and individuals involved in making it happen. What I’m wanting to create is a studio that makes great content and shares the abundance with the people that make it happen. Whose with me?
