This achievement represents a significant milestone in our ongoing mission to improve affordable housing in the region. Following a recent Planning Committee, our Toland Square Estate project for Wandsworth Borough Council received planning approval. This 100% social housing development will provide 7 much-needed new family houses on the Estate, contributing to the Council’s ambitious target of delivering 1,000 sustainable homes by 2029. All homes are designed to Passivhaus standards, ensuring exceptional levels of energy efficiency and sustainability. The proposals involve replacing underutilised garages and introduce significant landscape improvements, including new storage areas, enhanced biodiversity through new tree and climate-resilient planting. Given what we know about the absolutely essential benefits of close access to nature and natural playspace for our own wellbeing, and that of our children, it’s astonishing that #BirminghamCityCouncil can entirely overlook its own open space policy on a vast site such as this. Of course it’s unrealistic to meet the full requirements on such a dense development, but for the proposed scheme to meet only 12% of that required by policy? In a city centre with a 32ha deficit already in public open space for its resident population. Virtually every residential scheme built in the city centre can justify offseting its obligations regarding green space because of limitations of their sites. This is not the case here! #CityPark4Brum is asking for just 25% of this vast site- mainly publicly owned land- to stay that way. So many of us in #Brum enjoy the legacy of our city’s green space pioneers - Chamberlain, Ryland, Cadbury. Our Regeneration partnership, Genr8 Kajima Regeneration, has recieved funding approval from Knowsley Metropolitan Borough Council for the £130m regeneration of Huyton town centre. The Council agreed to press ahead with the ambitious vision for Huyton, giving the green light to the necessary site demolition and enabling works and approving the release of the funds needed to progress detailed design to planning for Phase 1 of the transformational scheme. Phase 1 of the regeneration project includes: 🔑 72 new one- and two-bedroom apartments for affordable rent to buy 🛌 A130-bedroom branded hotel 🌳 A new village green and enhanced public spaces at the heart of the community. 🎨 A state-of-the-art community hub with cultural, leisure, and skills spaces. 🚲 A fresh approach to transport with EV charging, cycle provisions, and improved public transport links. #Regeneration #HuytonTransformation #Genr8KajimaRegeneration

The information session regarding "Welcome Home' villages based upon cohousing principles went well yesterday with residents, a planner, builders and other regenerative design practitioners. The discussion covered an outline of a detailed model of cohousing that could be implemented in regional townships across Australia with a test case in central Queensland. From our discussion two points arose: 1. the need for a central resource relevant to Australian/NZ conditions for information and access to professionals that councils, new residents, development industry representatives and anyone else who is interested in cohousing/ecovillages to refer to would be very useful 2. Other countries have engaged council officers who were trained in cohousing and other forms of resident led collaborative housing whose focus was to assist resident groups AND council planners to work together for implementation of collaborative housing projects. Both of these two are worthy comments. New report: Missing Middle Street Trees 🌳 Trees are beloved urban features, offering year-round benefits like cooling, shade, and softening cityscapes. Street trees, in particular, distribute these benefits to everyone. Melbourne urbanists have been at the forefront of this love affair, as seen in their calls for more street trees on residential streets, such as between parking bays. And so, because street trees are good, YIMBY Melbourne believes we should have more of them. Our new report aims to: a) Provide an overview of current tree distribution in Melbourne b) Offer an evidence-based costing model for increasing tree canopy as we densify Melbourne's missing middle Context: The Victorian Government plans to deliver 400,000 new homes across Melbourne's missing middle in the coming decade. Our report considers how both our housing targets model and the government’s interact with tree coverage. While densification may require removing some private backyard trees, it presents an opportunity to redistribute trees into the public realm, benefiting all Melburnians. This report explores how Melbourne can grow its street tree canopy, improving amenity and climate outcomes for current and future residents. Our goal: A more liveable, sustainable, and affordable Melbourne, as outlined in our flagship report, "Melbourne's Missing Middle." 🌳🏙️
