Happy Friday!! For the second straight day, I am looking out my window at gloom and rain. Deborah and Nash could not be happier. Of course, Nash will at some point have to go outside and take care of some business. On the positive side, our plants, fruits, and veggies are enjoying the nourishment. In the midst of flickering lights yesterday, I had the chance to talk about one of my favorite topics. #Smallbusiness. Specifically, #strategicplanning, #goalsetting, motivating teams, and engaging employees. The conversation with the Alaska MEP was so much fun and it was a good reminder about stereotypes and preconceived notions. When I think about #manufacturing, it would typically conjure thoughts of auto plants, and semi-conductors, or textiles. We forget that many manufacturers are, at their core, makers. Some are making jewelry and have a work space at home. Some my be making granola and using a shared kitchen. Some my be printing t-shirts with the lastest meme. All of them are manufacturers and, in most cases, small businesses. The challenges I talk about with my clients in the #construction industry are similar and they're generally not technical challenges. The struggles are frequently organizational, structure, clarity of purpose, and harnessing the power of people. So, no matter your industry, I think the conversation will offer some ideas to consider. Is clarity the key to success? 🤔 During the chaos of Covid, Beau Groover stepped in as an interim manager for a large brand. The team was 3–4 weeks behind and lacked focus. When he asked, “What are we chasing—date, customer, or dollars?” the response was, “They’re all important.” To Beau, that meant nothing was truly prioritized. To restore order, Beau helped the team focus on a single goal: completing tasks by date. He assigned steady team members to manage daily operations while problem-solvers addressed existing issues. The solution wasn’t complex, but it was effective. Within two weeks, the team caught up because they had clarity. They knew what they needed to achieve, why it mattered, and how success would be measured. “If we all understand what the mission is and why it matters, it’s pretty easy to coach people in that direction,” Beau notes.
