The recent Q3 analysis by Fierce Biotech reveals a concerning trend: 𝟰𝟵 𝗹𝗮𝘆𝗼𝗳𝗳 𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝘀 were reported in the third quarter of 2024, impacting at least 𝟮,𝟲𝟱𝟵 𝗲𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗼𝘆𝗲𝗲𝘀. This mirrors the 𝟰𝟲 𝗹𝗮𝘆𝗼𝗳𝗳 𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝘀 reported during the same period in 2023. August saw the highest number of workforce reductions, with 𝟮𝟭 𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝘀, highlighting a shift in investor sentiment that has particularly affected gene editing companies. Tome Biosciences, for instance, announced layoffs of 𝟭𝟯𝟭 𝗲𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗼𝘆𝗲𝗲𝘀, while Galera Therapeutics approved a liquidation plan, reducing its workforce to just 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗱𝘂𝗮𝗹𝘀 after an FDA setback. Major pharmaceutical companies such as 𝗕𝗿𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗹 𝗠𝘆𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗦𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗯𝗯, 𝗕𝗮𝘆𝗲𝗿, 𝗣𝗳𝗶𝘇𝗲𝗿, 𝗠𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗸, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗔𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗮𝘀 contributed significantly to these numbers, as layoffs remain a common response to clinical failures and market adjustments. Conversely, companies like 𝗡𝗼𝘃𝗼 𝗡𝗼𝗿𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗸 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗘𝗹𝗶 𝗟𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘆 have avoided such cuts, benefiting from the recent obesity drug boom. Despite these challenges, the landscape is not entirely bleak. Many displaced workers are finding new opportunities within emerging biotechs, with firms like 𝗖𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗱 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗽𝗲𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗰𝘀 securing $𝟯𝟳𝟬 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻 in funding and 𝗔𝗿𝘀𝗲𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗕𝗶𝗼 raising $𝟯𝟮𝟱 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻 to grow their teams. What are the real consequences of leaving positions unfilled in your clinic? Loss of revenue. -Increased pressure on current staff. -Longer wait times and delays between appointments. -Fewer patients receive care. Having open or “hard-to-fill” roles doesn’t mean your current strategy is ineffective, nor does it imply that it won't work for other positions down the line. However, it does create an opportunity for fresh ideas, partnerships, and innovative approaches that can help prevent similar situations in the future. Since I’ve created the post about me making things better, I’ve had tons of recruiters (and even CEOs) in my inbox with opportunities. And while it feels so great to have climbed that mountain, I’m certainly not going to allow anyone to pull me back down. I said that to say, even when you’re feeling desperate - hold your values and your boundaries close. Otherwise, you’ll end up right back in the same position bc you accepted a role (or employer) that didn’t align with you. TLDR: I want to continue helping people!  --- Last month, my team was impacted by layoffs, and unfortunately I was one of the unlucky bunch. In spite of the shock and fear that comes with uncertainty, my mom’s words of advice continue to carry me forward: “you're placed where you're most able to help and where you land next will allow you to help even more people.” And that’s exactly what I intend to do. I had the amazing opportunity to work for a start-up company that was mission-driven and supported the medicare population with high mental health acuity and a high burden of social needs. Together, these two factors contribute to high hospital readmission rates and prolonged length-of-stays correlated with a lack of effective outpatient behavioral care. Over the last year and a half, I… - Owned the end-to-end partnerships pipeline for health systems across Florida (and as a team of 1, I truly mean end-to-end) - Expanded into 9 new markets, forming local relationships with community based organizations, post-acute facilities, general hospitals, and mental health clinics - Set up operational processes to create bidirectional relationships with external partners, allowing direct external referrals to be received from the ED and Inpatient  - Designed and launched non-clinical hospital rounding to better support hospital staff and bridge collaboration between the outpatient and inpatient setting - Trained boots-on-the-ground outreach teams to expand localized coverage with facilities and organizations However, the accomplishments I am most proud of are the times I was able to help a relative or prospective patient who phoned into our referral specialist line by transforming healthcare from a daunting concept into an accessible and approachable answer to their worries.
