I remember being in college with the dream of being a Creative Director (lol before I decided that wasn't for me) and scouring LinkedIn for CDs to reach out to for informational interviews. I noticed that there weren't many females in creative director roles, and I actually reached out to a LinkedIn group I was active in to ask about why. Was there a reason women weren't in these roles? Some responses I got were that it was a challenging role for having a family in and many women didn't want to put up with it.... I thought "well that sucks." Why are we just accepting this as a matter of fact? During that time, I came across the 3% Conference and the stat that, at the time, only 3% of creative directors were women. I was lucky enough to have an employer who encouraged and allowed me to attend the 3% Conference in 2015 (along with Pam Longazo Anderson!) to learn more about the industry and the challenges women in our industry face — along with ways people were working toward and driving solutions. I still think about two core lessons I learned at that conference to this day: 1) "If you want something ask for it." 2) "Diversity is inviting someone to the party; Inclusion is asking them to dance." After moving to Columbus, I also had the amazing opportunity to serve as a founding advisory board member of Women in Digital (now Together Digital), which I am still a member of to this day. I am so thankful for the opportunities that have been given to me, the networks I have built, and those who are working — on a large scale through organizations or on an individual scale through lifting others up — to get us closer to equality in the workplace. While the 3% figure serves as a stark reminder of where we were (not that long ago), our progress is also very evident. We still have some room to go before we hit the 50% mark, but I am so thankful that we're on our way. Happy Gender Equality Month!
