The best leaders are great listeners.
The founders I want to work with have a rare blend of attributes. They need to have remarkable self-confidence since they need to power on when everyone tells them what they are doing is crazy, yet at the same time, they need to be able to listen. It’s a rare combination.

Love this as an example of how invisible biases can sneak in. The statement is true, but theres a baked in assumption that we all know what self-confidence and listening look like. There’s been a lot of talk in the past week or so about VCs and the appallingly small amount of money that gets to female founders. When reading statements like this, I think it’s important to pause and ask yourself: What traits do I identify as confidence? What body language, tone, physical characteristics, language, and actions embody it for me? Swap out ‘confidence’ for ‘listening’ and the same question applies. Bonus points if you then make a point of proactively looking for those same characteristics in different forms. An example I heard a while ago is a woman being looked over for a promotion because she ‘lacked confidence’. She was shocked: her collaborative approach had been mistaken for a lack of conviction, instead of a powerful leadership tool. The decision makers lost an incredible leader because of their unconcious bias. There’s huge opportunity in bringing bias into the light - you give yourself a massive strategic advantage: the ability to spot talent and value that’s still invisible to others. #bias #unconciousbias #leadership #confidence
