In just the first few weeks of January 2024, ~60 puppies have been dumped at just a single animal rescue centre, the Shenton Park Dogs Refuge Home, Perth, Western Australia. The Refuge is doing an amazing job but as a community we have to lift our game. Overall, ~75% of the dogs coming into the care of the Refuge are unsterilised. Desex. Your. Dogs. Don't wait for them to have an unwanted litter & leave charity volunteers to pick up the pieces. With all due respect to ppl's struggles, the brutal truth is that cost of living concerns are not an excuse for animal neglect and cruelty. I have met homeless youth who are responsible animal guardians, making payment plans with their vet to have their dogs desexed, vaccinated & wormed. - Before you welcome an animal into your family, plan for expected & unexpected costs - If the numbers don't add up, think about other ways to have dogs in your life (e.g., volunteering at a rescue organisation) - Adopt Don't Shop - Desex. This week recognizes and celebrates animals that are up for adoption but have not been able to find a home! According to the ASPCA, animals are considered “Less-Adoptable” after 48 weeks in the shelter. Dogs, for example, can be considered less-adoptable based on their breed, age, a disability and even coloring. At VERGI, we work with hundreds of rescues that save animals off the streets and from shelters. They are often either very ill or injured and are brought to us to help save their lives. We have witnessed first hand what amazing pets they turn out to be! Several of our team members have also rescued and adopted pets that would be considered “less-adoptable”. Her reactivity also sets off the dogs around her. While her kennel was being cleaned, I put her in a temporary kennel at the end of my row where she barked at every dog that walked past even though I put a blanket over the kennel. With her removed, the dogs in the kennels neighboring hers were not as aroused when other dogs walked past them. When I went into her kennel to spot clean in the afternoon, she was constantly jumping on me or trying to find a way to push out of her kennel. I entered kennel and reached hand to her and she winced, then once I held hand still for her to sniff she began wagging tail again and stepped closer to be pet . While petting she stood still with tail down, but when I would stop she would begin fast wagging tail and get onto my lap. Treat motivated, but did not appear to know any verbal commands while getting a new picture, would follow my hand holding treats with eyes. Please contact BARC if you can help! Dogs and Best Friends Animal Society supporters and staff filled the Hall of Governors Tuesday to celebrate Gov. Spencer Cox declaring 2024 as no-kill shelter year in Utah. “Whereas, achieving no-kill for all of Utah’s animal shelters is within reach, and would make Utah the largest no-kill state and the first no-kill state in the West,” Cox wrote, “Now, therefore, I, Spencer J. Cox, governor of the state of Utah, do hereby declare 2024 as no-kill shelter year in Utah.” The declaration encourages animal shelters to change policies to save pets’ lives. A no-kill state means that the shelters within the state save the lives of pets they house. According to data from Best Friends, 47 out of 60 shelters across the state are no-kill. So far, 45,538 furry friends have been saved. The total save rate is 87.8%, while 1,700 cats and dogs have been killed. Integrated Resources Institute wishes everyone a Happy International Assistance Dog Week! August 4-10, 2024 is International Assistance Dog Week! It is a week where we recognize the hard work of assistance dogs that help people with disabilities. Here are some ways you can celebrate! Participate in a local event: Participate in a dog walk, fundraiser, or dog show to learn about the different tasks assistance dogs perform, such as seizure detection and seeing-eye work. Volunteer for Animal Welfare: You could volunteer at your local animal shelter, help with an adoption drive, aid a rescue, or help local organizations care for puppies and dogs in training. January is Unchain a Dog Month, a time when we should increase our awareness of the struggles of dogs who are kept tied up outside in the cold. Dogs are entitled to warmth, comfort, and companionship, just like any other family member. Bringing them inside is the kindest and safest thing we can do for them. There are many ways you can help this month, including talking to your neighbors who keep their dogs tied outside. Explain the dangers of exposing dogs to cold weather and offer resources. If your neighbors are receptive, you can reach out to Barrio Dogs, and we will do our best to provide care for their dogs. Another way to help is by advocating for change. Contact your local legislators and animal welfare organizations such as Texas Humane Legislation Network (THLN) and express your support for stricter laws against chaining dogs and promoting responsible pet ownership. You can also donate, volunteer or foster dogs that have been neglected or abused by organizations that are working to rescue and rehome them. Lastly, you can spread awareness on social media by sharing information about Unchain a Dog Month and the importance of bringing dogs inside. Let us all work together to achieve a world where dogs are treated with the respect, kindness, and love they deserve.
