Agriculture holds the key to one of the most essential elements of life on earth- food production. In recent years, it has become widely known that one of the world’s smallest creatures- the bee- plays a key role in ensuring that ecosystems function properly. This in turn ensures that the environment is healthy enough for agricultural produce to thrive and remain a food source for people. At last week’s Trialogue Business in Society Conference 2024, one of our breakaway sessions, sponsored by FirstRand, focused on how FirstRand supports empowerment programmes for beekeepers. Investment into this sector ensures that funds keep flowing, supporting the health of beekeepers, bees, and in turn ecosystems, agricultural systems, and human food sources. Happy #WorldBeeDay! 🐝

#Leveraging community engagement to empower sustainable agricultural development. We are exited to announce that through the FoodWealth Grain Shellers Investments earlier this year we started the FoodWealth Initiative taking a holistic, multi-faceted approach to address the challenges faced by small-grain farmers in our region. At the core of the solution is our shelling machine. These efficient shellers help farmers reduce post-harvest losses by quickly and effectively removing grains from the cob. By minimizing waste, farmers are able to sell a larger portion of their harvest at better market prices, thereby increasing their incomes. Alongside the grain shelling services, the FoodWealth initiative also provides training and support to help farmers adopt more sustainable agricultural practices. By empowering farmers with the right knowledge and tools, the project aims to build long-term resilience within the local agricultural ecosystem. #Foodwealth #SustainableAgriculture

🤝 Today, we had the privilege of hosting the Independent Chairman of the FAO, Hoogeveen Hans. 🗣 Our discussions focused on the crucial role of engaging the private sector to drive the transition towards more sustainable agrifood systems. In that spirit, we highlighted two inspiring examples of startups making a real impact: 💚 PrimeJack®️ & FiberFoods: Creating side income streams for farming communities to enhance financial stability and climate resilience, starting with their PrimeJack® value chain in Uganda and Kenya. 🌴 FarmTree B.V.: Developing tools to forecast the long-term impact of farming practices, helping decision-makers evaluate ecological, financial, and environmental outcomes with the FarmTree® Tool. And we showcased the outstanding and innovative campus of Wageningen University & Research, renowned for its great impact in food and agriculture. 🙌 The future looks bright as we continue to collaborate and innovate, paving the way for a more sustainable and resilient agrifood sector. #agriculture #foodindustry

Canadian Agriculture Day [today!!] isn't just a celebration; it's a call to action. Our agriculture sector, rich in innovation & purpose, deserves a louder stage, both nationally & internationally. I had no idea when I started Westwood Strategies, that we'd be working with five amazing Ag clients. The lesson is clear: proactive storytelling is not optional. It's essential. Reflecting on sectors like energy, we've seen the pitfalls of reactive narratives. For agriculture, the opportunity lies in shaping a proactive, compelling story that resonates across borders. Sustainability is a common thread. It's more than a practice; it's a promise—a promise of stewardship, innovation & a sustainable future that Canadian agriculture is ready to lead. As consumers increasingly lean towards sustainable choices, our farmers & agribusinesses are not just participants but pioneers in this global shift. Today, let's amplify the voices of Canadian agriculture. Let's celebrate the sector's innovations, its commitment to sustainability & its untold stories. Our agency is here to help narrate this journey, sharing the dedication and forward-thinking that define Canadian agriculture. As a global economy continues to pose significant risks to all life on Earth, a powerful counter-trend is emerging, as millions work towards a system shift that prioritises cultural and biological diversity. Grassroots initiatives like syntropic food forest farming, seed saving and community composting stations for soil resilience are gaining traction, highlighting how important biodiversity becomes in both food production and sustainable agriculture - without resorting to the use of GMOs. As more farms begin to connect directly with consumers through the farm-to-table movement, local economies begin to thrive and take on a life of their own - bolstering not only the life of the soil, but encouraging food resilience, sovereignty, and the wellbeing of the local community. Close to home, Mangaroa Farms was recently featured on Country Calendar, spotlighting a few key characters - however, in the spirit of diversity, it really takes a village to pull off a vision like the farm.
