At the start of this Black History Month, we embrace a spirit of gratitude, celebration, and respect. Black history is made each and every day—may we cultivate an intentional focus on and deepening awareness of Black history that persists throughout the year. As Rev. Dr. Jessica Chapman Lape observed during last year’s Black History Month chapel, “There are so many beautiful stories needing to be told, and we need the chance to hear them.” For those aspiring toward allyship, we invite you to ask yourself: Whose experiences are you centering? Whose voices are you listening to? How might you take action to ensure Black history in and around your communities is known and celebrated?

I appreciated this thoughtful essay by Jemar Tisby, on how to reflect and engage deeply with Black History Month. I encourage you to read the article, but I'll summarize the first few points. 1) go to a museum alone, and take your time. 2) read a whole book on some aspect of Black history. 3) ask a family member or friend to tell you about their experience in this time period. How do you plan to engage Black History Month for the next few weeks?
