Brand Strategy + Creative Direction + Copywriting | Building culturally relevant campaigns and tools for lasting social impact | Author of the Note to Self newsletter
I’ve seen many “Art Directors Don’t Gatekeep” posts lately. Especially on IG and TikTok. It’s amazing to see resources being shared openly. 📚 But what’s even more impactful is when top design leaders—like Executive Creative Directors and VPs of Design—share their hard-earned insights. That’s where real growth happens. 🚀 As senior designers move up the ladder, finding practical advice gets harder. Jason Culbertson has packaged his experience into an actionable resource called Open Design Docs, which is brilliant. 💡 https://lnkd.in/dFmSheZX It’s refreshing and incredibly helpful for anyone wanting to level up. 🙌 If you’ve got resources like this, share them below. Everybody wins. 📈

Well summarized! Professionals in the field are advised to focus on the strategic aspect of their work, going beyond routine tasks, to drive impactful outcomes that contribute to overall organizational success. #StrategicFocus
A recruiter recently asked me if I would consider moving into a non-design role to increase my impact. I was taken aback - what could possibly be more impactful than design! But it also starting me thinking about whether we are all on the same page about design's impact and accountability. I got really lucky when I started Torii. I knew I wanted to create a thriving community of design thinkers. And, I hit the jackpot by hiring an incredible Design Director, Phil Clayton. Together, we created a strategy that's turned our design culture into something pretty amazing. Here's how we did it: 1. A lot of purpose-driven work happened. - We started with a clear purpose. - Brought together the best designers to solve design challenges. - Focused on meaningful work to attract the right designers. 2. A people-first approach. - We hired for attitude and a thirst for learning. - Our team is a group of lifelong learners constantly pushing the boundaries of what design can achieve. 3. By building a supportive framework. - We wrap a strong support network around our team. - Offering mentorship, community events, and personal development plans. 4. By valuing happiness. - The happier our design staff, the better they perform and represent us. - Prioritising their well-being has been key to building a strong community. My advice to anyone looking to foster a similar environment? Focus on people. Great clients are important, but a happy, engaged team is the real foundation of success. How do you prioritize your team's happiness and development? I'd love to hear your thoughts.

We recently hosted an enriching session in our "Let's Grow Together" series at our design studio, where one of our talented designers shared his journey and the challenges he faced while transitioning from Lead Designer to managing an entire project. Praveen Puthumaikan detailed the obstacles he encountered and the creative strategies he employed to overcome them. Here’s what he shared to inspire the team: 1. Navigating Challenges: Embrace challenges as catalysts for growth and innovation. Confronting obstacles directly can lead to creative solutions and stronger project outcomes. 2. Learning and Growth: Continuous learning is essential. Each project offers valuable lessons, such as setting clear role boundaries during transitional phases, driving personal and professional development. 3. Promoting Dialogue: Openly discussing areas of uncertainty and asking questions builds healthy relationships and promotes a culture of open communication, enhancing individual understanding and strengthening team cohesion and trust. At STUDIO iX, we believe in the power of knowledge sharing and mutual support. Events like these not only keep the team informed but also inspire us to learn from each other, enhancing our collective expertise. #designexperience #designteam #uxdesign #designstudio #designers #teamtalks

More than design: Bridging creative and futuristic concepts through hardware and software prototyping. Strategic Positioning | Experimenting | De-Risking
Reading such posts where presumably a non-design role is assumed to create considerably greater impact, indicating a marriage of personal gain with an organisation’s growth, prompts me to also think about design's impact and accountability (just like the author). I’ll add one more to the mix Design’s “Role” + impact + accountability. Beneath the iceberg, this phenomenon, which we refer to as such, has been troubling us since the early days of design being recognized as a profession, in one discussion form or the other. Despite the efforts of visionary thinkers like Victor Papanek since the 1960s, who have emphasized the need for new visions and alternative approaches to design for the "greater good", the actual significant change or alteration is yet to be seen. During the period from the early 1960s to the late 1980s, there was a clash between the ideas of social design and industrial design. This clash highlighted the tension between the pursuit of social good and the increasingly rapid industrial and consumerist ideals. Now, there is a cry about the entire profession of design as a whole, including its business aspect and consumerist ideals. The root cause that no one talks about is the current incentive model and its impact on the operation of professions and society as a whole. Thoughts? #designthinking #designtheory #criticalthinking

3 Top Tips to Bring Your Design Ideas to Life (and Win Your Team Over!) 1. Open & Honest Communication: 🗣️ A problem shared is a problem halved So, don't hold back! Face issues with your team, use their strengths and involve them in the design process. It's been a game-changer for me. 2. Research as a Team: 🧐 Do you lack fancy tools like UX Zoom or Maze? No worries. Start with 5 teammates and seek their thoughts on your early designs. Early feedback can spark great improvements! 3. Embrace Design Challenges: 🧑🏽💻 Remember, great ideas can come from anyone. Involve different perspectives for more creative designs. Respect the opinion of the PMs, Engineers, Sales, etc… You never know who will share something new you haven’t thought of. Collaboration is key to creativity. 4. Stay Determined: 💪🏽 Feeling stuck? Keep pushing. It can sometimes be frustrating if it’s not clear what you need to deliver But don’t lose heart and keep going. Requirements always come so get the Project Manager on your side and close to you Make them your “best friend” The PM I’ve worked with can be your secret weapon to get your ideas built Even the “crazy, most creative” ideas _______ I'm eager to hear your thoughts and experiences. Hi Fam, After reviewing countless portfolios and case studies for inspiration, I noticed a recurring theme: the design process is often presented as a straightforward sequence of Empathize, Define, Ideate, Prototype, Test, and Iterate. While this approach is valuable, it almost suggests to non-designers that anything beyond these steps isn’t "proper" design. But is that the ideal process? What does your design process look like? #DesignThinking #UXDesign #CreativeProcess #DesignJourney #ProductDesign #DesignExploration #BeyondTheBasics #hiring
