Today is my 20th anniversary in New York City. I still remember the plane ride in: I packed everything I could fit into two suitcases, titled my trip “New York or bust,” and was ready to plunge into a city where I didn’t know anyone, have a job, or a solid place to live. I was a long way from Iowa. The first person I met was Jill. She became my roommate in a fourth-floor walk-up, a one-bedroom apartment converted to two, in Midtown East above a Lenny's. After an extensive Craigslist search, Jill said she picked me because I was the only person who didn't “totally freak her out.” What a compliment! I couldn't blame her for being a tad skeptical. My first two work ventures were an unpaid internship at Rolling Stone by day and tutoring a middle school boy at night. There is a real art to the latter — you want to help the student improve their academic standing, but not so much that you run yourself out of business. Moving to New York came from writing two lists upon graduation from college. One contained logical, straightforward moves. The other was full of completely illogical, makes-no-sense-but-what-the-hell kind of thinking. Moving to New York was at the top of the second list. So I went for it. It felt like what an intrepid creator should do. Twenty years in I can tell you it never really gets easier than those challenging early days. Of course, things do get better and bigger. The highs are higher than I could have imagined, including launching The Creative Factor. And the defeats can feel crushing. Maybe the most important thing is that you feel just about every feeling life has to offer. I forever have a soft spot for anyone who takes a similar leap towards New York — or their version of New York. There is always time in life for the logical, but the best adventures come from chasing those dreams.

Thursday thoughts: It’s been a looong time since I was the “new kid” at work, and it’s been an even looonger time since I was a summer intern. As the olde…, um, most seasoned intern in the Omaha metro area, here’s what I’ve learned after six weeks: 1. I don’t know anything, and that’s OK. It’s kind of a relief because I was the veteran teacher who (allegedly) knew everything. 2. Working 8-5 is an adjustment. It’s very different from teaching from 8-3:30. 3. Don’t be afraid to ask questions. 4. You belong there. They wouldn’t have hired you if they didn’t think you could do the job and were a good fit for the office. 5. Welcome and seek out feedback. 6. Ask for projects and additional work if you find yourself with an empty inbox. 7. Identify and cultivate relationships with potential mentors. 8. It’s OK to sit back and just observe for awhile. You have to warm up to the others in the office just as they have to warm up to you. 9. Learn people’s names and call them by their name. (This is an old Dale Carnegie trick) 10. You’re going to make mistakes. Take responsibility for them, fix them if possible, and learn from them.

Get to know our team! Today we are featuring Lucas Greenberg our summer intern from Case Western Reserve University! What do you do at UH Ventures in one sentence? - I've been interning with Matthew Zenker and the new UH Haslam Sports Innovation Center with their incoming deal flow. I research, analyze, and compile a variety of data and information to assess sports-medicine and health companies/markets to help accelerate and invest in them. I'm also working on the upcoming SportsLand event with Patricia Colella, MBA, by helping out in all areas of event management. What are your favorite things to do outside of school? - I love to exercise and try new workouts, but more importantly, I love to eat. During COVID, I began cooking and baking as a way to unwind; I try to make a meal four times a week. My favorite dish to make is my grandfather’s shrimp and pea risotto. Favorite binge-worthy TV show? - The Office. I have seen The Office over five times and I can quote certain scenes by heart! What is your favorite restaurant in Cleveland? - Batuqui; a fun Brazilian summer dinner spot. What do you love about Cleveland? - I was born and raised all around Cleveland, and throughout my time, there has been one constant: the people. Hii connections, Recently I saw an inspiring short film which has an element of real inspiration for all of us!! The name is disclosed towards the end of this post, I want to share the most critical learning elements which I learned and interpreted while observing the situations of character through which he had gone through. There are THREE things which if we have then we can surely stabilise our lives amidst these chaos of #competiteveness and #hardhittingfailures, not surely we can overcome but we will be in a better situation then we are actually in- 1.)The situation depicted in the film where the character- CHRIS GARDENER was wandering in search of home after he became homeless due to non-payment of rent bills. Lesson-Staying calm amongst our tensed nerves and working with the given resources is the only way we can crack the situation rather than beating around the bush to get ANYTHING by doing ANYTHING. 2.)The situation where CHRIS GARDENER was not able to sell the products which he has bought for sale and was not getting any job for his family survival. This was the most hard thing in this phase when he was not able to support his family when he wanted to. Lesson-In these kind of situations when you are not getting support from your loved ones just because you can`t make it, there is only one way ,i.e. Just #BELIEVE in yourself and have faith in the process that you are juggling with. As there will be an end to these situations and the grinded you will sneak out at that moment. 3.)The moment CHRIS GARDENER got his internship in a brokerage firm, the field which he dreamt off to be in. He first thought not to do it as it was having no salary and no job confirmation. But eventually he joined and worked very hard. And he ended up establishing his own brokerage firm. Lesson-We are not knowing when life will be giving us second chance, but if you feel from inside that this universe has flipped a coin for you, #JUSTGOFORIT and never look back as this is the phase when your final level of patience is being tested. “When you’re building your dream or business you’ll be happy 1/3 of the time” I had some to watch this amazing interview with business mogul Emma Grede, founder of Goode American she shared how she’s worked very humbling jobs and internships on her journey to success. She shared how she’s failed more times than she has wins. How in retrospect all the jobs she’s had help to cultivate the business woman she now is. The most valuable lesson I've learned so far in my life is the importance of developing good habits, eliminating bad ones, and the value of consistency. 3. What are your top three productivity tips for a successful workday? My three productivity tips for a successful day are to schedule out my responsibilities, cut out distractions, and focus on each task individually rather than multitask. 4. As a child, what career did you want to have when you “grew up?” When I was young, I wanted to be a marine biologist because of Shark Week. 5. What is something that brings you joy? When I was leaving high school I asked myself the question that everyone does, "what do I want to do with my life?" I decided I want a castle. So the next question I asked was as important as the first. "What kind of person do I need to become to have a castle?" I would need to direct staff, manage real estate, learn to make money or find money, hire good people, and turn an old cold building into something profitable. From that day forward I made decisions with those skill sets in mind. I took internships that don't pay. I started businesses, made some successful, and watched some fail. I purchased courses and coaching. And I networked like my life depended on it. I went through a whole lot of pain while watching my peers settle and have nicer cars and better houses, but all of them will find a cap with their jobs, and be forced to learn in a short time what I have been learning my whole life. How to trade their value rather than their time. Life has never been easy, but it has always been fun. If you don't know the purpose for your life you should find it. If you do know, make decisions with that in mind and when life gets hard don't get discouraged. You are learning how to be the kind of person you need to be to achieve that dream.
