The world's first large-scale electrically heated steam cracker Focus Engineering keeps you up-to-date on relevant developments, news and opportunities in the Dutch industrial sector. Today, we are sharing an article from news website Industrievandaag. Recently, BASF, SABIC, and Linde celebrated the official opening of the world's first demonstration unit for a steam cracker that is heated electrically on a large scale. This marks a significant milestone after three years of development, engineering, and construction. In March 2021, a joint agreement was signed by the three companies for the development and demonstration of solutions for the electrically heated steam cracker. The steam cracker plays a large and important role in the production of basic chemicals. These furnaces require substantial amounts of energy to break down hydrocarbons into olefins and aromatics, typically occurring at temperatures around 850 degrees Celsius. The new demonstration unit shows that continuous production of olefins is possible using electricity as the heat source. By utilizing renewable energy, this technology can reduce the CO2 emissions of one of the most energy-intensive processes in the chemical industry by at least 90%. WHICH IS THE PRIMARY SOURCE OF HYDROGEN IN THE INDUSTRY THAT CHEMICAL PROCESS ENGINEERS MUST DEAL WITH It is true that alternating sources, I mean, renewable sources energy are getting more attention worldwide. But currently, the use of steam methane reforming (SMR) for hydrogen production is still the cheapest one, and because the chemical process engineer should be familiar with it. I have worked on some projects (from proposal to commissioning and startup in Brazil and China) involving SMR and from the point of view of chemical process engineering and plant design it is a nice process where you will find heat exchangers, pumps, reactors, adsorbent vessel, and so on. Let me share with you a simplified process description for SMR process: Natural gas is compressed and pass-through some energy recovery in order to increase plant energy efficiency. Before entering the furnace, natural gas is mixed with superheated steam. Carbon-steam ration is controlled to prevent coking formation in the furnace. Hydrogen production happens in two steps, in the first one steam and methane produces syngas with the addition of energy to the reaction. In the second step, the syngas got to the shift reactor where the syngas reacts with steam and produces hydrogen with the release of energy. The hot stream containing hydrogen is cooled down and goes to the PSA system where the hydrogen is purified removing CO2 and other contaminants. This way, it is possible to have hydrogen purity above 99.999% in volume. There are 2 main reactions: Furnace For this process, high temperature (700–1100 °C) steam (H2O) reacts with methane (CH4) in an endothermic reaction to yield syngas. WHAT ARE YOU LEFTING BEHIND WHEN SHIFTING FOR A NEW JOB Some time ago was my last day at MDC Energia. At MDC, as a chemical process engineer, I was part of the team responsible for the selection and development of technologies for renewables projects. Mainly, biogas upgrading to biomethane (Renewable Natural Gas). When I arrived around 4 years ago, RNG was a totally new area for me (my background were in the Air Separation Industry, Hydrogen SMR and CO2 Liquefaction). In a few time, biogas production and characteristics, technologies for biogas upgrading, and options for product deliverary were part of my daily activities. I learnt a lot on these years with MDC and I am very grateful for that 😄 Besides all the learning, I was able to built strong connection with the Engineering team, Businnes, Operations and also other departments. And that is for sure the greatest treasure I am getting with me from all these years. I am happy for knowing I still have great connections from my first job in Braskem, and also in White Martins where I was for 7 years. But... what it matters for your chemical process engineering and plant design career? To develop a career you are proud of, you must invest in your personal development, technical skills, and relationship. InnoVent Technology wins significant turnkey project for acid recovery from wastewater stream of a leading mining company. This design, engineering, procurement, and fabrication (EPF) project for supplying a turnkey acid recovery system, will be executed by InnoVent #India and supported by InnoVent Mexico’s engineering team. The client faced challenges related to recovery of acids going in their waste stream. InnoVent designed an innovative scheme for recovery of these waste acids and were subsequently awarded the turnkey EPF for this design. Chemical #process industries often face challenging situations in dealing with wastewater treatment. #innovent has deep expertise in renewable and environmental systems, including designing recovery systems from such waste streams and converting them to valuable products.
