Trillium to Build World's First Biobased Acrylonitrile Demonstration Plant Trillium Renewable Chemicals (Knoxville, Tennessee) has announced the selection of INEOS Nitriles' Green Lake facility in Port Lavaca, Texas, to establish the world's first demonstration plant converting plant-based glycerin into acrylonitrile. This project is named "Project Falcon." Trillium Renewable Chemicals has developed a groundbreaking technology for producing sustainable acrylonitrile, a critical raw material used in industries such as toys, automotive parts, aerospace components, medical supplies, and clothing. Corey Tyrie, CEO of Trillium Renewable Chemicals, stated, "We are thrilled that INEOS Nitriles' Green Lake facility, the largest acrylonitrile production plant in the U.S., will be the site for Project Falcon. This milestone is a significant step towards bringing our technology to market and producing sustainable bio-based acrylonitrile on a large scale." Following a $10.6 million Series A financing in December 2022 and a $2.5 million award from the Department of Energy's Advanced Manufacturing Office in June 2022, Trillium Renewable Chemicals built a pilot plant that successfully produced acrylonitrile from glycerin. Trillium's sustainable acrylonitrile boasts a lower carbon footprint compared to standard acrylonitrile produced via the Sohio propylene ammoxidation process. The company's innovative approach addresses the growing demand for more environmentally friendly bio-based raw materials. Trillium Renewable Chemicals continues to operate a pilot plant and has successfully provided samples to customers. Insights from the pilot operations have been invaluable for designing the new Project Falcon demonstration plant. Hans Casier, CEO of INEOS Nitriles, emphasized the importance of Trillium's decision: "INEOS Nitriles is excited to collaborate with Trillium Renewable Chemicals to advance the production of sustainable bio-based acrylonitrile. Leading specialty chemicals innovator Perstorp Group has launched a new grade of 2-Ethylhexanol (2-EH), now available with 100% renewable, traceable mass-balanced carbon content. When including the biogenic CO2 uptake absorbed by the renewable raw materials used, the product has a negative carbon footprint cradle to Perstorp gate. Neste and Lotte Chemical Team up on Renewable Chemicals and Plastics Neste and South Korean chemical company Lotte Chemical are teaming up to make chemicals and plastics more sustainable. The companies embark on a strategic collaboration to replace fossil resources with renewable raw materials in the manufacturing of chemicals and plastics. This will enable products and applications with a lower carbon footprint compared to those produced from fossil resources. The collaboration will see Neste providing renewable Neste RE™, a raw material for chemicals and plastics, that is made from 100% renewable raw materials. Lotte Chemical will use Neste RE at the company’s Korean sites to produce various common types of plastics and chemicals in Lotte Chemical’s broad product portfolio. These plastics and chemicals may be used in multiple applications and in supply chains for various products ranging from packaging to construction and from textiles to electronics. LG Chem and Eni Sustainable Mobility to Develop Biorefinery Utilizing Bio-feedstock LG Chem and Eni Sustainable Mobility jointly announce that they are exploring the possibility to develop and operate a new biorefinery at LG Chem’s Daesan chemical complex, 80 kilometers southwest of Seoul, South Korea. Together, the companies are examining the technical and economic feasibilities for the proposed project. Final decision for the investment is scheduled by 2024 and the plant will be completed by 2026 at the existing integrated petrochemical complex in Daesan, Korea. Committed to Produce More Sustainable Chemicals: The new biorefinery will leverage LG Chem’s integrated value chain as well as the existing utilities and facilities of the industrial site. The potential biorefinery aims to meet the growing demand for more sustainable fuels and plastics produced by low-carbon processes, as well as to help progressively decarbonize the energy and mobility sector. It is designed to process approximately 400,000 tons of #biofeedstocks annually using Eni's Ecofining™ process, developed in collaboration with Honeywell UOP. It will also have the flexibility to process renewable bio-feedstocks and produce multiple products including Sustainable Aviation Fuel (#SAF), Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (#HVO), and bio-naphtha. Committed to producing more sustainable chemicals, LG Chem will leverage its knowledge and resources to ensure the project's success. LG Chem has been manufacturing eco-friendly plastic products using bio-naphtha since 2020. Bringing Extensive Experience in Biorefining: In April 2021, LG Chem became the first South Korean chemical company to receive ISCC Plus certification for nine Bio-circular Balanced products. Four months later, LG Chem started shipping its first bio-balanced SAP (#SuperAbsorbentPolymer) products, also certified with ISCC Plus, to overseas markets. In October 2022, #LGChem expanded its #ISCCPlus certified eco-certified product portfolio to over 50 items, reaffirming its ever-growing commitment to #sustainability. LG Chem will now work closely with Eni to increase the visibility of its eco-friendly integrated brand LETZero. Eni will bring its extensive experience in biorefining, along with its Ecofining™ technology. In 2014, Eni accomplished the world’s first refinery-to-biorefinery conversion at Porto Marghera, Venice, followed by a second converted #biorefinery that has been working in Gela (Sicily) since 2019. In June 2023, #Eni entered in a joint venture with #PBFEnergy acquiring 50% interest of St. Bernard Renewables LLC bio-refinery in Louisiana (USA) also based on the use of the Ecofining™ technology.
