Jan van der Laan, who retired from Philips over 20 years ago was doing some household cleaning recently when he rediscovered a piece of Philips history from the time he worked as a manager at the Philips Ultrasound group in the Netherlands almost a half-century ago. In an old suitcase, he found a prototype of what was then considered a portable #ultrasound device. “This thing is heavy and by no means portable,” Van der Laan said. “We needed a trolley to transport the device.” This technology has come a long way in the past few decades. For example, Philips Lumify ultrasound is an app-based handheld ultrasound system that, among other applications, can be used in emergency care and community-based pre-natal and post-natal care, making point-of-care ultrasound truly accessible. Our systems perform an estimated 44 million diagnostic and interventional procedures each year. The prototype in the old suitcase marks the early phase of point-of-care ultrasound at Philips, which acquired the American company Rohe Scientific in the 1970s. An American team created the Sonodiagnost as a prototype for a new Philips ultrasound system, which Van der Laan thinks was brought to the Netherlands by a specialist around that time. It was never put into production, and a prototype ended up in Van der Laan’s attic. The Philips Heritage Organization now has the device in the company's historical equipment collection. It will also be repaired, if possible, by volunteers from the Foundation for the Preservation of Historical Philips Products. #Healthcare #Innovation #TBT

"Health is humanity's greatest asset." 💙 This is the idea that Dr. Alexander Skau, an eye doctor who serves some of the most remote areas in Norway, keeps at the forefront of his thinking and work. Because of the inaccessibility to #healthcare that some of his patients have faced in the past, Alexander is changing the game in connected care with the help of ZEISS retinal cameras and cloud solutions. With this technology, he can transport data hundreds of kilometers from his patients' local optometrist to his office in Bodø, instead of having them travel up to three days for routine eye exams. This has a big impact on diabetics, who need to have their eyes checked up to twice a year. As we traverse the changing field of advanced medicine with Alexander, we see what technology can truly do for people's quality of life and health. See more of the challenges he confronted while creating this connected care program, and witness how ZEISS empowers him to chart new paths to better #health for his patients: https://lnkd.in/d7M-FzyD ZEISS Medical Technology Retscreen AS #ZEISS #Innovation #HealthcareInnovation #ConnectedCare
