On April 26, 2024, the Department of Health and Human Services issued a Final Rule that, according to HHS, provides clarity on #Section1557 with a goal of ensuring nondiscriminatory access to care for all, including women, people with disabilities, LGBTQI+ people, people with limited English proficiency, people of color, and people regardless of age. Husch Blackwell's Natasha Sumner covers key provisions of the 2024 Final Rule, which will take effect on July 5, 2024: https://lnkd.in/gDMwRnAr #healthequality #healthcareregulatory

This is so true, and what's more, much of the early intervention for trans kids like my son, including puberty blockers, are used with cis kids all the time and nobody questions that care because a. They assume, rightly, that it's necessary, and b. They would never think to intrude on a medical decision that was made between a patient, their family and their health care providers. "Yes, you're right," some will say, "but when used for gender-affirming care the medication is being used off-label and we don't know anything about how that will affect trans kids." First, many, many, many medications are prescribed off-label. My father has a heart condition that is being newly treated with a medication that was specifically developed for people with diabetes. His pulmonologist's prescription is definitely off-label, but you know why that's not a big deal? Because off-label use of common drugs accounts for close to one-third of all prescriptions according to a 2023 study. Second, we do know, because gender-affirming care is not new. This care is indeed decades old, and yet the research continues because everyone is invested in providing the best care possible. My 17-year-old trans son has been enrolled in a study at Lurie since he was 11. So, please don't let fearmongering and misinformation distract you from the very basic fact that gender-affirming care is essential for trans kids.

“With essential health care for trans and gender diverse kids, nothing's new,” Goepferd said. “We’ve been providing this care for decades, we’ve been using the same medications for decades, we’ve been following international guidelines that are now in their eighth revision and initially came out in the ‘70s. So this is not new care. The only thing that’s new about it is the controversy.” All kids, teenagers and young adults deserve access to the essential healthcare they need, ideally close to home. #protecttranskids #transkidsdeservetothrive https://lnkd.in/eiw8Mpc4

Happy International Women’s Day! Today, on #InternationalWomensDay, let's shine a light on the vital role of women in healthcare and advocacy. Women’s health research often gets overlooked, yet it's crucial for achieving equity and parity in health and healthcare. Many women serve as unpaid caregivers for loved ones, facing unique challenges affecting their economic independence and well-being. It's time to address these issues and create a more inclusive and supportive environment for all #IWD2024

The third component of the multifaceted approach advocates often use to place patients at the center of their care is: 3️⃣ The Representation of Underrepresented Groups Patient advocates play a crucial role in bringing the voices of underrepresented and underserved populations to the forefront. They actively participate in the development of healthcare policy, shaping national debates about healthcare and advocating for health equity for all. 🙋🏿 🙋🏻♂️ 🙋🏾♀️ Our healthcare system cannot be considered truly equitable or successful until everyone can receive the medical care they need and deserve regardless of race, gender identity, education level, employment and socioeconomic status, and more. 🏥 #patientadvocacy #patientadvocate #patientcenteredadvocacy #healthequity #healthadvocacy #healthcare

I help women's and LGBTQ+ health companies share their science in compassionate, approachable language.
Incoming fangirl alert! 🤩 This week’s ✨ One to Watch Wednesday ✨ features a #startup I’ve been following for ages: while they’re bigger and more established than many of the other companies I feature on #O2WW, I love their work too much to leave them off the list. Let’s give a warm #O2WW welcome to FOLX Health, a #digitalhealth platform for the LGBTQIA+ community. The Problem: 🚨 LGBTQ+ people face substantial barriers to accessing healthcare, and #transgender individuals are among the most underserved patient populations (Emerick & Messmore, 2022). 🚨 In rural areas of the United States, #healthcareproviders often lack exposure to and experience caring for transgender patients. Even those who are willing to provide #genderaffirming care may lack the training and knowledge to do so (Emerick & Messmore, 2022). 🚨 Among a cohort of emergency medicine physicians, nearly half reported that their residency training did not include enough content on caring for #lgbtq patients. Over 80% felt they needed to learn more to properly care for this population (Lien, et al., 2021). 🚨 LGBTQ+ patients struggle to find providers with whom they feel safe, accepted, and heard. The Solution: 🏥 FOLX Health provides members with digital access to a variety of critical healthcare services, including #primarycare, #mentalhealth services, #sexualhealth and #reproductivehealth care, and #preventative medicine. 💉 FOLX Health providers are specially trained to offer trans patients gender-affirming care services such as #hormonetherapy and education about their options for various aspects of transition. 🏳️🌈 FOLX Health’s clinical team is deeply connected to the #queercommunity: one-third of their clinicians identify as transgender, #nonbinary, genderqueer, gender diverse, or two-spirit. Almost 4 in 5 identify as #bisexual, #gay, #lesbian, pansexual, or queer. 💵 Importantly, FOLX Health is committed to keeping their services affordable for members: they partner with multiple insurance plans, allowing insured patients to use their benefits to pay for FOLX Health services. 💰 For uninsured people, FOLX Health offers transparent, flat-rate pricing: medical consultations are $79-159, mental health visits are $129, and lab testing for gender-affirming hormone therapy costs less than $50. In a climate that is increasingly hostile to LGBTQIA+ people, I’m grateful for the efforts of FOLX Health. As a Series B-funded company, they are pushing #lgbtqhealth to the forefront and proving that their model works. I can’t wait to see what FOLX Health does next! 🚀 👀 FOLX Health is One to Watch! 👀 #queerhealth #inclusivehealthcare #healthequity #lgbtqally #feministhealthcare #inclusivemedicine #clinicalconsultant https://lnkd.in/gKt5svU8
