The new 2021-2022 Global Resources Report is out! globalresourcesreport.org This is the most comprehensive report to date on the state of global funding for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and intersex (LGBTI) issues. This biennial report documents data on over 20,000 grants awarded by nearly 1,300 foundations, intermediary NGOs, and corporations and by 16 donor governments and multilateral agencies to over 8,000 grantees during the two-year period of 2021–2022, and draws on ten years of funding history to document the change over time The report provides detailed data on the distribution of LGBTI funding by geography, issue, strategy, population focus, and donor type, offering a tool for identifying trends, gaps, and opportunities in the rapidly changing landscape of LGBTI funding.

The new Global Resources Report has landed! This is the most comprehensive record of funding for LGBTI communities worldwide and a decade of data makes this report the most comprehensive and important to date. The headline is really heartening – a 56% increase in funding in 2021-22 for LGBTI issues in the Global South and East. A testament to the work of activists around the globe making the case for their work and achieving change. More needs to be done (global funding for LGBTI rights still represents only 39c in every $100 of foundation spending), but progress is being made. Like all reports, the devil is in the detail – this increase in funding is not equitable and growth is not always guaranteed. 61% of all funding continues to focus on the Global North and 60 countries saw reductions in the amount of funding they received. Strikingly, Southern Africa has seen almost no increase in the funding it receives since 2013. Just accounting for inflation, this is a significant real terms reduction in funding over the decade. On this Trans Day of Visibility, let's shine a light not only on the bravery and resilience of the trans community but also on the vital importance of funding trans-led organising around the world. Trans-led organisations play a crucial role in advocating for the rights and well-being of trans individuals everywhere. They provide essential support, resources, and advocacy, often in the face of immense challenges and obstacles. Despite the scale of the problems facing the trans community, the resources to support them are scarce. Even within a paucity of funding for LGBTQI organisations, trans organisations are the least funded; more than half of trans groups globally have annual budgets of less than £7,500. That's why it's imperative that we prioritise funding for trans-led initiatives, ensuring they have the resources they need to continue their vital work. I’m delighted to share that I’m starting a new role at Compassion Canada on June 10 as Philanthropy Manager for our newly established national major gifts team. These last few years, my passion for philanthropy and the fundraising profession has only grown deeper. This aspect of my previous role brought me much joy. This solidified my decision to pursue a role in the philanthropic engagement department in this new structure at Compassion. As the only staff with CFRE International credential, I am eager to mentor this team and elevate our fundraising practices to new heights. I’m excited that my mandate includes expanding Compassion’s reach into diaspora communities across Canada, igniting excitement for advancing life outcomes for more children more quickly. I signed the offer on May 30, before #AsianHeritageMonth ended. This is personally significant, and here’s why: Asians aren’t well represented in the fundraising profession and rarely invited into leadership roles. According to a recent report, <10% of fundraising professionals in North America are people of colour and Asians make up <3% despite the demographic becoming more multicultural. These percentages shrink even more drastically for leadership roles. I recently read Sheryl Sandberg’s book, Lean In. While it is on gender equality, the content can also be applied towards racial equity: “The hard work of generations before us means that equality is within our reach. We can close the leadership gap now. Each individual’s success can make success a little easier for the next. If we push hard now, this next wave can be the last wave. In the future, there will be no female [or POC] leaders. There will just be leaders.” Championing change is a privilege, even when the journey is hard and progress is slow—deeply disappointing most times. Sheryl further writes, “We need to be grateful for what we have but dissatisfied with the status quo. This dissatisfaction spurs the charge for change. We must keep going.” Yes, I am deeply grateful, and I will not stop advocating. I am excited for this next season at Compassion—for this opportunity to spur more people on towards love and good deeds, releasing children from poverty in Jesus’ name. 📣 Exciting Funding Opportunities for FACE Members! We've got some fantastic news to share with you today. The City Bridge Foundation is on a mission to make a big impact, and they're starting right here with small grants that could make a huge difference for your projects. After a comprehensive five-month review, the grant-maker has not only doubled the maximum grant they'll offer but also broadened their horizons. They've expanded their support beyond environmental and senior-focused initiatives to include LGBTQ+ communities and refugees, migrants, and asylum-seekers. This means more of us can benefit from their generosity! But that's not all. The City Bridge Foundation is also doubling the income threshold for eligible organizations, allowing those with an income of up to £200,000 a year to apply for grants. And here's the icing on the cake: the maximum grant limit has been raised to a whopping £20,000 or up to 50% of an organization's income. Even better, they're accepting applications on a rolling basis, giving you flexibility and time to prepare. Successful organizations will have up to five years to utilize these funds. The foundation's motivation for these changes? They want to remove barriers to funding access for smaller organizations and ensure that funding reaches where it's needed most. They've listened to existing grant recipients, charities, voluntary organizations, and funders, and they're ready to make a positive impact in London's communities. The UK LGBTQI International Giving Report evidences donations from UK sources, including government, foundation, corporate and individual donations. It identifies that the UK has donated just £13.4 million annually to support international LGBTQI issues, yet still ranks as one of the top donors, accounting for 15% of global giving in this area, underscoring just how under-funded LGBTQI issues are in the Global South and East. UK trust and foundation funding for LGBTQI issues internationally in 2019/20 averaged £8.6 Million, this equates to 26p in every £100 of all UK foundation giving. UK Government funding for LGBTQI issues internationally in 2019/20 averaged £3 Million, this equates to 2p in every £100 of all international development funding. UK Corporate funding for LGBTQI issues internationally in 2019/20 averaged 1.2 Million, this equates to 6p in every £100 of all UK Corporate charitable giving. And UK Individuals funding for LGBTQI issues internationally in 2019/20 averaged £605,000, this equates to 3p in every £100 given to charities in the UK by individual donors. This report identifies barriers preventing further funding, and makes recommendations on how these barriers could be overcome.
