Doing my best to be a good human with a desire to do the right thing and help make a positive difference with others
Fair Accountability is confirmation that: You matter What you think matters What you do matters Before we look at what Fair Accountability is, let's take a look at what accountability is not. A transactional leader would say that the simple definition of accountability is “Do it or else!” They may say things like: “If you fail, I’m holding you accountable” “I’m leaving that with you” “That is a measurable item for you” “I need regular status reports so I can hold you accountable” “If you can’t do this, I’ll find someone that can” These are not the words of a trusted leader that you would (or should) follow. A leader worth following will build fair accountability knowing it is a shared process (not a moment to fear) and is held in a partnership built on trust, with honesty and safety. It can be done in a number of ways, but the key elements in the approach are: -Clear and transparent dialogue to create shared meaning and understanding of what is expected, must be done, or achieved, and why that is important -Agreement about what is being committed to by everyone -Following up to sustain attention and support and commitment -Feedback for motivation, recognition, and opportunity to learn and correct -Certainty of consequence - there must be a consequence for delivering (or not) on an accountability. Certainty of: Recognition of accomplishments -Additional support when success is proving more challenging than expected -Fair assessment of performance demonstrated to carry the accountability. In conclusion: Without fair accountability we cannot trust, we cannot grow, we cannot succeed in being all we can possibly be.

Accountability is critical if you want to win. Once your team understands what they are accountable for and strives to achieve it, you’re on the right track… To be accountable however one must clearly understand what is expected of them. So accountability goes hand in hand with clear communication and realistic expectations. #leadership

What different approach about accountability. So, the most important part of accountability is not about the things that did and report, is about the opportunity to growth. #DisruptiveLeadership

Interesting thought. Can we reach our full potential without accountability? While I believe in the power of accountability, I'm also wondering whether ambitious and driven people who succeed rely on accountability to reach their full potential. What are your thoughts on the subject? Happy Friday :) #accountabilitymatters #leadershipdevelopment #questiontime

Husband, Father of 3, Former Mayor, and current Assistant Superintendent, Adjunct Professor, Maxwell Leadership Team
I’ve created both formal and informal streams of accountability. Formal with my superintendent and informal by seeking feedback about my leadership from across and down through my school district. I simply ask: How can I help you?, What can I do better?, and What is it like to be on the other side of me? #leadership
