"You have no Authority here Jackie Weaver, none at all".. (gets kicked out) I just listened to the Stanford University Graduate School of Business podcast "If/Then" on my commute to work today, and it got me thinking. The chaotic Handforth Parish Council Zoom meeting that went viral wasn't just entertaining—it highlighted real issues in governance.(Just in case you missed this gold nugget of comedy: https://lnkd.in/guqyAt7d) Andy Hall's points about needing better incentives in democracy hit home. The system needs to support and encourage effective participation to avoid dysfunction. Interestingly, Hall pointed out that voters aren’t as polarized as we think—it's the politicians driving the division. This happens because the system often attracts extreme voices due to poor incentives. When places like Alaska increased legislator pay, they saw less polarization, showing that better compensation can attract more balanced candidates. The podcast also touched on why people participate in democracy. Homeowners are more likely to vote because they have a direct stake, and simple tactics like public voting records can boost turnout by tapping into social accountability. A younger demographic, that can be renters, are less likely to vote. (*cough, go vote) Here is some data: https://lnkd.in/gb67yhtv Being new to the public sector, transitioning from the private sector just seven months ago, I see these dynamics in a fresh light. Coming from a background where efficiency and clear incentives are important, almost essential, it's evident that public service has unique challenges and opportunities. Heading into budget season here in Nevada, these insights are crucial. Policies need to attract good talent and build public trust. If you're looking for something new to listen to on your commute, I highly recommend "If/Then." Democracy might be messy, but with the right incentives and practical steps, it can work better. https://lnkd.in/gmD_Hy93
