There are many people that give me a quizzical look when I tell them I am now running a personal travel agent business. So I get this same question, “why do I need a travel agent when I can book online now?” You can, we all can, in the connected internet driven world we live in, whether it’s leisure or corporate, we can all choose the online booking button. We can all book online for the hotel deal, or direct with an airline, we may even save a bit of money doing so finding their discount deals. So let me answer the question of ‘why?’ with a true story. Last week a flight is cancelled an hour before it’s due to depart, it is of course as we all know the airlines responsibility to get you home. Everyone looks around for where to go, the airline help desk has a flurry of action quickly forming a long long queue.. down the queue the Chinese whispers go with the information that all the flights are full, they can only do the next flight with their airline, they are offering a return to the hotel, for 2 nights and to flight out Sunday via 2 flights to get home. My client calls me, he has my direct number, I answer knowing that my client is travelling. Immediately I can look at all the options to get the client home, I can get an alternative for my client leavng that evening. I arrange an airport lounge for him to relax in until departure. I know my clients arriving home 5 hours later than now planned, I arrange a delivery of milk and provisions to his doorstep for when he gets home. A very satisfied client walking past the painful airline desk queue off to sit on the lounge. He also knows I’ll assist with the travel insurance and airline refunds when he gets home. We all know flight cancellations and delays happen, todays global outage bringing that home to many. When this happens I will be there when you need me, as your personal travel agent I find the best solution. . Here are a couple of questions for you: Why use a Travel Advisor (they use to be call Agents) these days? Hasn't the Internet killed that career field/job? To answer the first question, only those researching daily can find the best deals. Those consumers who do their own research for deals spend between 15-20 hours of internet searching to find that best Domestic travel deal (this involves, flights, hotel, auto rental/ or ground transportation). For International travel, that time involving researching for the best deal increases to 90-120 hours. And finally, no consumer thinks amount how to minimize the travel risk, thus risking all of their travel costs, to the good will of the Airline Gate Agent, Tour Operators, and Hotel Desk clerk. And if anything happens while traveling, that consumer is at the mercies of that gate agent, who wants only to give them the least amount funds, and you're still going to dig in your pockets while being inconvenienced. Today's Travel Advisors are encouraged to become a member of the American Society of Travel Advisors (ASTA for Short), where they become a Verified Travel Advisor. A Verified Travel Advisor certification instructs that Travel Advisor in not only how the sell travel products, but also the laws rules and in those risk minimization strategies those protect the consumer. In short better service and relationship with not only a travel professional, but a friend that can provide you the ability to travel with minimal risk, and the best value for the money spent. Now to the second question - Not really. The travel agents of old where someone that issue a ticket, and took a fee. Sell more tickets, earn more. Today, the Travel Advisor, is person who is trained on what the value of travel is. They know where the best deals are, and are tied into a professional network of tour operators (both Domestically and Internationally). And most importantly, what deals are available and not published on the internet. Also, where the get the best travel insurance which ensures your protection when you become stranded in Munich, Germany; mid travel. They are also available via phone, or have already provided you a 24/7 emergency contact number to call for help in working out the problem. Pesky summer travel hiccups + what to do about them ➡️ Seat Swap Surprises So, you’ve checked in online and picked your seats, but then you get to the airport and... surprise! They’ve changed. What to Do: Head straight to the gate desk (not the ticketing counter). Gate agents are your best friends here—they can help fix the seating situation or find someone willing to switch seats. Lost or Delayed Luggage ➡️ Your bags are MIA What to do: Find the airline’s baggage desk near the baggage claim area and file a claim before you leave the airport. If you can’t locate the desk, call the airline ASAP to report your missing luggage. Hang on to those receipts for any essentials you need to buy—just keep it reasonable (no designer splurges, unfortunately). Then, when you’re back, file a claim with your travel insurance. If you got ➡️ Delayed and cancelled flights What to do: Check the Department of Transportation (DOT) Dashboard: If the delay is within the airline’s control, the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Airline Customer Service Dashboard will show you what each airline should do to make it up to you. ➡️ Not Loving Your Hotel Room Your room’s not up to par? Here’s how to get it sorted What to do: Ask for the manager. Call from your room or go to the front desk and ask to speak to a manager. Be specific about the issues and honest about what resolution you’re seeking. ➡️ Rental Car Issues What to do: If your rental car isn’t what you expected, contact the rental company’s customer service. They might be able to upgrade or switch your vehicle. Always check the car for damage before driving off the lot and report any issues immediately.
