My oldest daughter said this while driving through Salt Lake City for the first time seeing all these mystery billboards. They spent a lot of money on a lot of billboards, they were a fixture in the area even before we moved there in 2018, and still so many people are not even sure what this company sells. 🚗It’s used cars, by the way. An industry reputed to not listen to or care about their customers. I found this out when I drove by a dealership, not from any billboard. They’ve doubled down on this campaign with no real call to action. It doesn’t really tell us what they do, what they want us to do, or give us any free value. Yesterday, we held our 21st meeting of Pickens United since 2016. It is an extremely uncommon setting wherein every elected official in Pickens County is invited to communicate with one another. I don’t know of any other county that does this … and we have great attendance. What struck me again yesterday is how fleeting our time is. I mentally noted that other than the clerk of court elected in 2008, none of us would’ve been in that meeting 10 years ago. I said the uncomfortable truth out loud with, “nobody in this room will be here in 10 years. What we do now is for others in the future.” Related to how fleeting our time is is the fact that what we’re doing is primarily setting our successors up in a good or bad way. Do we change local government? Do we put a moratorium in place? Do we invest in roads or parks? Do we invest in land now instead of being forced to pay higher in future? (All things mentioned yesterday.) We’re not all going to agree, which is why the real-life version of playing SimCity is immensely more complex & it’s all the more reason to communicate.

Starting to understand the value of the billboards in San Francisco, traffic is so horrendous there is nothing else to do but study them. Would love to hear thoughts about this one:

They had the Honor of being 1 of the 15 Bands participating in it. Typically Summer Band Camp doesn't start till first part of June, so these were some extra early sessions plus the graduating Seniors stayed for the event also. It was a whirlwind of activity leading up to this past Saturday. Plus there has been threats of bad weather during the Parade, we kept our fingers crossed. For those of you never participating in a large- scale Parade, there is a lot of hurry up and waiting involved. We had to be there in full uniform 2 hours before to get in the proper place then we waited. As we marched towards the start other participants would "blend" in behind and in front of us. Seen a couple of the Drivers in their escorts trucks, the Indy 500 Queen in her car and several Parade units. Our kids did amazing, I got to walk with them the entire route with our First Aid kit, just in case.... They all hang in there like the troupers that are and proudly represented our School and City. Let’s say you work for the Powerball lottery association. You know that the prize next week is listed at $925 million. If someone wins the prize, they can choose two possible payouts. The first option is based on 30 annual payments. The first annual payment is for $13.9 million and then the annual payment grows by 5% each year until the 30th payment is made. The second option is to take a single up front payment. As the lottery employee, your job is to pick an upfront payment amount that will make it so that the lottery association doesn’t care which option the winner picks. Check out my previous post about the time value of money. Assume that the current effective interest rate on a 30 year US government bond is 4.7%. Valuation is involved in more scenarios than you might think

It was the classic trap: I had time but no money. I needed improv students but didn't have the $ to advertise my classes. What I did have was friends who liked to walk and drink beer. I had just enough money to buy beer, thumbtacks, and print out a few hundred flyers. So, we decided to use the original social media - community bulletin boards. We posted all over town - the Mission, the Haight, the Marina, the Financial District, Bernal Heights, and other popular neighborhoods. We quickly realized that pushpins were too expensive and too easy to remove. The next person walking in would take your push pins and bury your flyer. But flathead thumbtacks solved the problem. They were not so easy to remove, and also much cheaper. We posted hundreds of flyers. We would put one tack per corner, or if it was a window spot, we would put one piece of tape on each corner. Eventually, the calls came in, and I got more improv students. But when I told my other friends about it, they asked if I could post their flyers, too. That was a few years ago. Now, we post flyers and posters throughout the San Francisco Bay. We also leave postcards in lifestyle stores. We also go to San Francisco, San Jose, the East Bay, and Silicon Valley. We even drive by Facebook and Google on our way to Mountain View. Even with the crazy inflation, we still use one thumbtack in each corner.
