It's not controversial - every school should have a library. School libraries should not be the realm of wealthy private schools - not if we care about equity and literacy for all children. As Philip Pullman says in this piece "“The school library is without question the most important room in the entire school, because it contains – or used to contain, or should contain – books that are not required for examination purposes. Books that no one might expect to find. Books on every subject under the sun. Books that some teachers don’t even know are there.” The Australian Library and Information Association and our partners in the Australian Coalition for School Libraries continues to call for every student to have access to a school library. #LibrariesTransform #StudentsNeedSchoolLibraries #AustralianCoalitionForSchoolLibraries https://lnkd.in/g5gpcU3Y

"14% of primary schools indicated having no library." Who would have thought the need to legislate for school libraries in the UK in 21st century?

Agree wholeheartedly, and may I add not only does every school require a library, it also requires suitably qualified library staff to lead the space and develop collections and collaborate with teachers to plan high quality learning with embedded general capabilities and rich resources.

It used to be the case that to be "educated" was to be "well-read" and this meant that libraries were seen as places of learning in their own right. Not just in schools and universities but also in homes, pre-schools, hospitals... anywhere that there is a desire to read and learn and understand the world in which we live. There is so much pleasure to be had finding hidden treasure in a long forgotten book on a library shelf, discovering the answers to questions that you never knew you had.... Libraries are amazing and that is why we need them.

Every child deserves access to a school library with qualified teacher librarians and every teacher will benefit from the resources and expertise found within.

I was talking to my supervisor about the lack of library literacy skills small children have in comparison when I had when I went to school. When children approach me at the library, I always take them to the library catalogue and support them in learning to find what they are looking for no matter how long it takes.

I can't wait to get back into schools and help increase not only literacy levels, but information literacy and reading engagement! Bring on Monday!

This is shocking. I thought every school had a library as a given.
