INSIDE OUT 2 is decent, but strains to make sure its base concept actually works There are some incredible gags and some of the most impressive animation Pixar has produced in years, but a meandering second act lets the whole thing down Check out my review on Skwigly Animation Magazine https://lnkd.in/e7-x2wka

I really wish Musker had been more specific here, because this kind of vague "we weren't trying to be woke" quote is so easy for anti-diversity knuckleheads to latch onto. So let's get specific. Clements' and Musker's movies before Moana: The Great Mouse Detective - I love this, not a hit but it's fondly remembered. Message: Nothing/Basil and Ratigan should acknowledge their forbidden love for the good of the realm The Little Mermaid - huge hit, turns Disney around into a new era, obviously it's pretty dang good and fun. Message: Teenagers are A MESS and should never be allowed to enter lifelong contracts - oh wait she gets married at the end of this? Aladdin: Another personal favorite, a gorgeous and silly boys' movie. Audiences eat this up, $.5bil hit. Message: Stop compulsively lying you handsome idiot Hercules: Another favorite for me, but loaded with references to Disney and mid-90s culture. Message: A hero's strength is measured BY HIS HEEEEART Treasure Planet: Totally fine and fun, Disney straight-up fumbles this release, audiences stay far away. Message: Real dads don't run WDAS's recent run: Zootopia - Amazing movie, personal favorite, $1bil hit, beloved by audiences. Message: Policing in a diverse world is broken and plagued with profiling and corruption Moana - Amazing movie, widely beloved. Message: Climate change dangerous, bad Ralph Breaks the Internet - Not well-remembered, but makes a lot of money. Flooded with Disney and corporate branding. Characters seem like different people. Message: Codependent friendships dangerous, bad Frozen 2 - Elsa fan here, I like it, most of my friends hate it but it's a $1.5bil hit. Story comes together very messily as documented by Disney itself. Message: Colonialism/imperialism bad, harmony with nature good Raya and the Last Dragon - Again, kinda liked it, but many don't. Message: No healing without trust. (This resonated for me, but it's kinda fumbled) Encanto: Amazing movie, another personal favorite, audiences adore it (on Disney+). Message: Toxic perfectionism tears us apart; No healing without accountability Strange World: Disney didn't even advertise this one and no one saw it. It's like.. fine, but kinda sluggish and not particularly powerful. Message: Honestly I can't remember, something about climate change Wish: Considered a flop. Obsessed with Disney brand, generic story and songs, thinly-drawn characters... a corporately-mandated self-celebratory jumble released in one of Disney's most disastrous years in memory. Message: Sometimes people want things; narcissists bad My point? IT WAS THE NINETIES! The messages may have gotten more political as our world has, but that's not what hurts the movies. What I believe Musker is trying to say is that the messages aren't what Disney needs to correct: it's the storytelling!! I would add that they also need to put faith back in their creatives, not just in the comfort of conformity to their established brand.
Animation legend John Musker: Disney Animation needs a ‘course correction.’ He also says that his last feature at the studio, ‘Moana,’ was “a very difficult project.”

I firmly believe that in film and animation, story and concept are paramount. They are among the core elements that inspire and drive my passion.

Thanks to Eve Benhamou and Anastasiia Gushchina, Spanish animation has its place in a reference animation blog such as Animation Studies 2.0. In the text I have published, I give a quick summary of the main animation studies from the beginning and during the dictatorship. I hope this is the first, but not the last, of these articles to bring awareness to the richness of our animation industry. https://lnkd.in/d63P3kbH

Today I'm excited to share my first ever animation video! I know it's just a little snippet, but I'm so proud of what I accomplished with zero prior experience. It might not be Pixar perfect (yet!), but I learned so much along the way, and I can't wait to keep growing and creating. "A 2-sec animation could take more than 2 days." Something I learned working in graphics & animation is that you have to be a broken record. I know many people who would want an animation as advanced as this within hours, not including potential client changes. With many places only hiring one graphics artist, it's easy to get burnt out especially when our workflow isn't understood. Despite working at the same place for over two years, I'm still met with frustration when I explain that I can't get certain projects done within half a day (no shade!). This story is so common with other graphics artists despite the medium. If you want to prioritize a deadline, set realistic expectations for yourself. If you want to prioritize the art, listen to the artists when they tell you what they need.
A 2-sec animation could take more than 2 days. This was a laborious scene I animated last year. It would be painful to render the glossy transparent look in 3D (with other reasons as well). So we did it with 2D in After Effects. To make it work, I had to manually fake the perspective. In the 1st scene, you can tell some are not perfect. In the 2nd scene, each piece is actually scaled from the center to fake that they’re coming towards the camera. To exaggerate perspective, when each piece was getting closer to the camera, I even stretched it longer. Have you worked on a few-second scene that took you days?
