As a Sales Professional are you better suited working for a large corporate or an SME? This is a question I often get asked by sales candidates. From my experience large sales teams have processes. Such employers have managed to grow their businesses by developing sales processes and activity levels that will enable the organisation to hit their sales and revenue goals. From an employee point of view it can be a 'painting by numbers' approach to sales and if you follow the steps you will be successful. However, such an approach may not work if as a sales person you crave autonomy and want to do things your way. Some find this way of selling a form of 'micro-management' When working for an SME, yes there are sales targets but there is less of an emphasis of how you achieve that revenue target. I mean if you hit the revenue target but are on the beach or the golf course at 2pm nothing is said because you have hit quota. Problems can arise though if you don't hit quota and there is no agreement with the owner or senior management of the business on what level of activities are acceptable. As a sales professional if you want to do it your way and you feel you have developed a proven way of getting results and you want to implement this then I recommend working for an SME. You will be far less frustrated and you will be given the autonomy to be successful. If you feel you would be more confident with being given a playbook to follow so to speak. Open to learning new ways of doing things and putting trust in a new employer and don't mind selling in a potentially different way then a corporate is more likely to be for you. For some reason they believe that Sales is a tedious job and is it is not easy to sell. It might be true to some extent in companies who do push sales but there are many companies whose product is not difficult to sell. In established Companies, sales is more of CRM and General Management and you might actually be moving to the most important department of the company.
