Cutting down forests in Tengah, Lentor and Dover East to intensify greenery on buildings will still result in a net increase in ambient temperatures and a weakening of climate resilience. In view of the climate crisis and biodiversity loss, we need to protect Tengah forest from further destruction while focusing on redeveloping previously developed areas instead. I love the idea of incorporating the culture into interior design and home design. Australia is a multicultural country. There is so much diversity in the country due to diverse cultures which build the fabric of Australian culture. Each Australian home is probably unique based on impact of original culture of the residents/ owners. Vastu is a science used in India to bring peace and harmony at home. Vastu or Vastu Shastra is an ancient Indian system of architecture and design that emphasizes the balance and harmony between a built structure and its inhabitants. Aligning the structure with natural elements and energy forces surrounding it can help achieve balance. Architects and interior designers can learn from Vaastu as a science to create a home which helps bring happiness and peace and harmony. #Vaastu #Vastu #Interiordesign #architecture #impactofculture #Indianscience #harmony #architects #interiordesigners #multiculturalism #australianhomes #VaastuShastra
South Asian Australian architect Sonia Sarangi wants us to bring South Asian design and our vibrant cultural built legacy into Australian homes. Sonia speaks about the powerful ideas of home and identity, and how South Asians can reconnect with our heritage through expanding our own vocabulary of own design. In her first piece for SAARI, Sonia marries her deep experience as the director of an architectural firm with the perspectives of young people. She speaks with Gauri vohra, a first-generation South Asian migrant and co-founder of Original Chai Co, and Sanskriti Mehta, a young South Asian psychologist about how their spaces can reflect their cultural connection. "South Asia is incredibly diverse and so is its built legacy. Its palette is incredibly rich – ranging from brick, terracotta, bamboo, timber, rammed earth and stone – and adapted to ecosystems including Himalayan high country, deserts, deltas, plateaus and tropical forests." "When we take the step to embrace our design heritage in little ways, at whatever scale is within our means, we can find a sense of comfort that deepens how we see ourselves." For those of us who struggle to find ways to bring culture into our home design, Sonia introduces a tool everyone can use to inform your design team - a cultural brief. "A cultural brief helps us advocate for the inclusion of our legacy in our built homes." This is an article you need to read, and one you'll keep coming back to. Stunning Facade Complete on $600M development.... and it looks awesome! The Seafarers façade is now complete, marking an exciting milestone in the $600 million mixed-use development at Melbourne’s North Wharf, opposite Melbourne's Exhibition Centre. Combining modern architecture with heritage restoration, this project breathes new life into the historic Goods Shed No.5 while introducing Australia’s first 1 Hotel & Homes. Located along Wurundjeri Way with great Yarra River views, the development stands out with its intricate façade of 4,856 panels. Designed by Fender Katsalidis and RIVERLEE, the lower levels reflect the angular design of the heritage-listed shed, while the upper sections echo the fluidity of the river itself. This project isn’t just about aesthetics. Over 2,000 salvaged items from Goods Shed No.5 have been incorporated, merging Melbourne’s rich architectural heritage with modern innovation. The new 3,500sqm Seafarers Rest Park will also add green space for residents and visitors to enjoy. An incredibly complex project, but shaping up nicely as a new icon on the Yarra River! If you want to hear more about the origins of this project, revisit our very first podcast episode of The Building Talks Podcast, when we spoke with Project Director Brett Howlett, and delved into the vision and early stages of the project. https://lnkd.in/gGpiSFUT With interior fit-outs now underway, Seafarers is set to deliver a unique blend of luxury, design, and cultural preservation. #BuildingTalks #MelbourneDevelopment #SeafarersMelbourne

Experiencing others take on real estate and area development facinates me. I’ve been strolling through different areas in Denmark, and their way of building is truly remarkable. Unlike the luxury apartment complexes you’d find in Dubai, there’s a different type of luxury here—one that has nothing to do with glitter and glamour, but everything to do with calmness and peace. Instead of piling up buildings like in New York and most cities, the Danish prefer to space things out. The paths between the buildings are wide, and your basic needs—supermarket, school, parks—are only a stone’s throw away. It feels like walking in a park. This thoughtful urban design promotes a sense of community and well-being. It’s a luxury that’s measured in quality of life rather than square footage or high-end finishes. Denmark’s approach to building not only respects the environment but also enhances the daily lives of its residents. #UrbanDesign #DanishLiving #QualityOfLife #SustainableBuilding #CommunityLiving #RealEstate #Architecture #UrbanPlanning #Denmark #Calmness #Peace

As temperatures rise and we face the growing challenges of climate change, it's worth looking back to see how our ancestors tackled the heat. Traditional Nigerian architecture has ingenious solutions for creating comfortable and sustainable buildings, even in our hot climate. Just think about the design of traditional courtyard houses - the central courtyard promotes natural ventilation, allowing cool air to circulate throughout the building. The thick mud walls act as excellent insulators, keeping the interior cool during the day and warm at night. Then the thatched roofs provide further insulation while allowing for natural airflow. Of course, finding a courtyard in Lagos these days is about as likely as finding a parking spot on a Saturday afternoon in Ikeja! Our developers seem determined to ensure that every square inch of land is occupied, leaving little room for those breezy courtyards and natural ventilation pathways. And it's not just the developers; we're all guilty sometimes. We get caught up in the allure of "modern" design, with its sleek glass facades and minimalist aesthetics. We forget that those glass boxes turn into ovens in our tropical climate, leaving us reliant on energy-guzzling air conditioners. I remember visiting a friend's newly built house in Lekki, very excited to see the latest in modern design. But the moment I stepped inside, it was like I was hit by a wall of heat. The beautiful glass windows, while admittedly very beautiful, were trapping the sun's rays and turning the living room into a sauna. My friend lamented about their electricity bills (and this was before Band A!) and how they couldn't seem to keep the house cool. It was a classic case of form over function. But even without a courtyard, there are still lessons to be learned from traditional architecture. We can incorporate thicker walls, greenery, and other passive cooling techniques into our modern designs. We can also advocate for more green spaces and prioritize sustainable building practices. I think it's time we rediscovered the wisdom of our ancestors. If we adopt these traditional techniques, I have no doubt that we can create buildings that are comfortable and environmentally responsible, even in our tightly packed city. #sustainablearchitecture #traditionalarchitecture #nigerianarchitecture #passivecooling #greendesign #climatechange #lagosdevelopment #innovation

Stilt Houses in Setúbal, Portugal Setúbal, once the center of the sardine industry and a thriving hub for salt production, has gracefully transitioned into a serene region that still offers sustenance fishing to its inhabitants. Nestled in this historically rich area, MAST's new stilt houses are a testament to thoughtful and sustainable design. Set amidst an estuary with walking paths perfect for bird watchers and near the adventurous hills of Arrábida, this development captures the essence of Setúbal’s new identity while preserving its fishing village charm. Access to these stilt houses is thoughtfully planned via boats or winding walkways, ensuring minimal disruption to the natural landscape. We're particularly impressed with MAST's commitment to sustainability. By building offsite using locally sourced CLT, they ensure that the natural beauty remains undisturbed. This innovative approach not only protects the environment but also supports the local economy. This studio has managed to look into the future of rising sea levels without blinking. With the first units set for completion in 2025, these stilt houses are poised to become a coveted destination for those seeking a peaceful retreat in a natural setting. Whether you're a nature enthusiast or someone looking for tranquility, this seems like an idyllic escape. https://loom.ly/K6AYaJc #housing #architecture #urbanplanning

The rapid growth of cities in #Africa has a detrimental effect on the quality of life within the cityscapes due to eradication of vegetation to pave the way for buildings. This in most cases creates heat islands. Roof gardens are a noteworthy undertaking in dealing with this phenomenon in addition to improving the aesthetic value of the city/building. We are at the preliminary design stages of this 22 storey high Mixed Use Development in Monrovia #Liberia which has roof gardens for this specific reason #greenbuildings #sustainablearchitecture #mixedusedevelopment
