Construction of Xavier Jesuit Academy is complete and welcomed its inaugural class of students earlier this month! Located in Bond Hill, this newly renovated learning space allows 45 scholarship-funded students, between third and fifth grade, to embark on a transformative journey, ensuring a solid foundation for their future, and eventually developing students into great men for others. It’s also the only Jesuit elementary school in Cincinnati! Our team, serving as construction manager for the project, completed demolition, renovation, and modernization of the existing space and new construction of an atrium and entrance, elevator shaft, site work improvements, and more. This new school includes open concept classrooms, an expansive multi-purpose room that will also serve as a gymnasium, a cafeteria and kitchen upgrade, a fully-equipped STEM lab, and space for a fine arts program, health and wellness initiatives, and a lush urban learning garden. Thank you XJA for trusting us to complete this work and for enabling us to contribute to making a #positiveimpact in the Bond Hill community. As an architect, you know the impact that natural daylight has on our well-being. But, do you know the transformative effects daylight has on students in educational facilities? Studies (1) reveal that schools bathed in daylight witness better academic performance, with students excelling in tests and achieving higher scores. In fact, a study by Heschong (2) revealed a 20% boost in math and a 26% spike in reading test progress among students in naturally lit classrooms. We believe daylighting isn't just about light; it's about a connection—to nature, productivity and well-being—and should be a fundamental part of building design. 🌟“Miss, why did you become an architect?” asked one of the 10-year-old boys in the class from underserved communities I was teaching to empower them to see that they too can pursue careers in architectural design. 🧠 This is exactly one of the many perks of spending time with children. They always ask those million-dollar questions that start with 'why!' 🌈 A child’s authenticity 🎨It all reminded me of when I had stumbled across a drawing I had done many years ago, hidden amongst children’s books and toys at my parents’ home. A few words strung across the drawing in purple marker read: “I wish that the poor people were in a house. And food.” I find it invigorating how there’s a certain confidence and authenticity in a child’s words. 👉🏾Long before I knew I’d be an architect, I simply wanted to bring joy to people’s lives and make sure everyone, especially those in need, was taken care of. ➡️Fast forward to today, it’s easy to get bogged down in everyday professional obligations and to lose sight of the bigger picture. But I always try to remind myself that as architects, we’re not simply in the business of making buildings. We’re crafters of life. 🗺️Architecture is merely the means, not the end. It’s a medium to create place for our lives to unfold before; like the detailed scenery of a theatre, painting the decor for the story of life to take place. 🤔 Take a moment for reflection ☀️It’s summer, where (hopefully!) things are a little less hectic than other times of the year, so what better opportunity than this to step back and dig deeper into our own whys. Asking ourselves why incessantly, just as a child would, to uncover that deeper personal meaning again. ✨ Now couldn’t be a better time to unleash your inner child and the purpose-seeking creative energy that comes with it. Agree? #InnerChild #Careers #Archtivism #Architecture 📢Shout out to Fatin, Mercedes, and Miru for a leading a great workshop to the CP Planning team to have us tap into our inner child and our ‘why’s to reconnect with what brings us to the work we do everyday!

Hello All, For my Masters of Architecture Thesis project this year, I am working in the Nubian Square area of Roxbury. I've been trying my best to listen to community needs as I work and I have been making connections between existing buildings, new projects that will be constructed in the area soon, and finding open lots to plan different architectural interventions. I am focusing on Roxbury as an underserved community with a lot of passion and heart especially in arts and performance, but a lack in investment through the decades has left the community in need. These areas in Roxbury are not very safe at night, whether its in the feeling of safety, or actually through statistical evidence and crime maps. ❕ ❗ I have created a survey and put up flyers around Roxbury with the QR code to it, but I will need some more help getting the survey out and circulating. It is about the experience of living, working, and walking through the Roxbury area with an emphasis on the feeling of safety. Please send this to anyone who might be connected with the Roxbury area and can keep spreading it to others, or people who just work or live in the area and go through it often. These responses directly inform my design work. Please let me know if you have any additional questions, if you can connect me to anyone else who can help, or if you would like to know more about the project. ❕ ❗ https://lnkd.in/e6HQWUEr

Welcoming Carrie Ford, our newest Engineering Designer IV in the Bridge Design department! She brings over 23 years of design experience to the firm, including design work, training, managing a department, Environmental Impact Studies, and proposal preparation. In her new role, Carrie will be pulling plan sets together, detailing, and streamlining the plan preparation process to better use everyone’s time/effort/budget. Welcome to #LifeAtLochmueller, Carrie! Get to know more about Carrie 👇 What led you to your career path in Bridge Design? “I like the process of seeing an idea come to fruition. My father was an engineer, and I am the only one of his children to go into this field. Being a woman in STEM/STEAM feels very inspiring. Showing my children you can be anything you want to be if you’re willing to put in the effort, regardless of circumstances, is also powerful motivation.” #WhyWednesday What is your all-time favorite TV show or movie? “Hot Fuzz – probably the funniest movie ever!” This or that: Bridge rehabilitation or replacement? “Rehab! I love seeing really old plans that consist of just a few sheets. It’s amazing that these beautiful bridges could be built with just that, compared to our plan set size now…” #newhire #welcome #welcometotheteam #newemployee #civilengineering #transportationengineering #bridge #bridgedesign

An Expert and Agent for High Performance Facade Systems that are innovative, aesthetic, sustainable, constructible, affordable and proven.
The average age of a TDSB school building is more than 60 years old. Some of these school buildings are late-19 century. We’re talking more than 100 years old. What happens inside these buildings has changed a lot. New tech, new textbooks, ideas and topics that simply didn’t exist 60 years ago. But on the outside? We’re still using a lot of the same facade materials as before. (And a lot of brick.) With all the advancements in building materials since then … How does this make sense? Deep energy retrofit should be on the minds of lots of school board folks. (For many of the school board folks I talk to, it is.) Facade systems have a lot to offer too, even without a full overhaul. Take Steni panels for example. Steni gives the architect a ton of options. Not just for #facadedesign and optimization, but also with colours and textures. Steni panels turn bland schools into buildings straight out of children’s art projects. It’s the difference between a drab dungeon and a building that is inspiring to walk into. Plus, Steni panels can hold up when kids play hard. Resistant to damage from hard playing and graffiti, they won’t need to be replaced every summer. Costly repairs and broken facades become a thing of the past. Just like many of our city’s existing school buildings, unfortunately.
