Very excited about our brand new Pew Research Center release today that continues our longstanding trends on tech adoption, including social media use, smartphone ownership & broadband subscriptions. This was a major undertaking, and I'm so proud of the team for all of the work they put into it. Here are some key findings: Social media use: https://pewrsr.ch/4bmoNaC - U.S. adults continue to use a wide range of sites/apps, with YouTube & Facebook being dominant players in the online landscape. - TikTok stands out for growth of its user base; a third of U.S. adults say they use it, up 12 percentage points from 2021. - Adults under 30 are far more likely than their older counterparts to use many of the online platforms, especially Instagram, Snapchat & TikTok. Mobile & Broadband: https://pewrsr.ch/49i9IFc - Most U.S. adults say they use the internet (95%), have a smartphone (90%) or subscribe to high-speed internet at home (80%). - Even with high rates of adoption overall, divides exist by income, level of formal education & age. - 41% of U.S. adults report using the internet "almost constantly." 25 teens--fifteen in focus groups and 10 completing diaries. What a tale they told about Instagram. 66% of 13-21 year old females and 40% of males experienced negative social comparison. Of that group of females, 52% tied their negative feelings to not being pretty enough. 32% of females felt worse about their body after approaching Instagram because they felt bad about their bodies. Jean Kilbourne was right. Meta just poured rocket fuel on it. This slide is from the leaked Facebook Papers. This whole document, about 52 slides, tells a similar story. This can be fixed, and Facebook has buried the answer, thus the need for the States' lawsuits. Social media first aid and social media harm reduction can help with this problem. YouTube and Facebook are currently the most used online platforms among U.S. adults, according to the Pew Research Center. However, with TikTok's user base having grown to 33% of adults since 2021, it's clear that social media preferences are changing. In the next five years, the increasing diversity and rise of younger generations, such as Gen Z, are likely to have an impact on the ranking of social media platforms. As these populations become a larger share of the electorate, their preferences and usage patterns may influence the popularity and ranking of social media platforms. This could lead to a shift in the dominance of current platforms and the emergence of new ones- beyond Tiktok! #socialmedia #trends #diversity #genz
