Dr. Ilia Kolochenko, CEO and Chief Architect of ImmuniWeb, comments for CPO Magazine: "Good old ransomware may well attain the status of a global cyber pandemic in 2024. The underlying infrastructure, spanning from exploits and data encryption malware to cryptocurrency laundering services, becomes readily available as a service on a pay-as-you-go scale. Worse, amid the unfolding geopolitical tensions and global uncertainty, law enforcement agencies and prosecutorial authorities have no more possibility to collaborate in complex cross-border investigations of organized cybercrime efficiently. Ultimately, cyber gangs calmly operate from non-extraditable jurisdictions with impunity, enjoying steadily growing income paid by desperate victims." #cybersecurity #cyberattack #ransomware #malware #uk #cyberlaw https://lnkd.in/ed65EJnZ

Major Crackdown on the 911 S5 Proxy Botnet In a significant victory for cybersecurity, U.S. authorities, in collaboration with international partners, have dismantled the notorious 911 S5 proxy botnet. This sophisticated network, operated by Yunhe Wang and his associates, facilitated cybercriminal activities by routing malicious traffic through compromised computers worldwide. The botnet infected over 19 million IP addresses across nearly 200 countries, enabling various fraudulent schemes, including identity theft, financial fraud, and even pandemic-related scams. This coordinated effort involved law enforcement agencies from the U.S., Singapore, Thailand, and Germany, leading to the arrest of key operators and the seizure of assets worth approximately $30 million, including luxury cars, cryptocurrency wallets, and properties. The operation underscores the critical importance of international cooperation in tackling cybercrime and safeguarding digital infrastructure. As cyber threats continue to evolve, it is crucial for businesses to adopt comprehensive cybersecurity strategies and leverage intelligence and international collaborations to mitigate risks effectively. #CyberSecurity #RiskManagement #CyberCrime #911S5 #GlobalSecurity

🚨 LockBit ransomware admin identified and sanctioned The FBI, UK National Crime Agency, and Europol have announced indictments and sanctions against Dmitry Yuryevich Khoroshev, the admin of the LockBit ransomware operation. Top 3 takeaways: 💸 Launched in September 2019, LockBit has extorted over $500 million in ransom payments and conducted over 7,000 attacks across various countries. 👮♂️ A law enforcement action that took down LockBit’s infrastructure, leading to the recovery of stolen data, cryptocurrency addresses, decryption keys, and a reduction in the number of active affiliates. 🥸 Despite the recent law enforcement actions, there is speculation that the same threat actors may continue their activities under a new name. #cybersecurity #news #lockbit #ransomware #kraven #KravenSecurity #adamgoss #cti #threatintelligence

Discussing this with Diana Selck-Paulsson 🌻 today: Does anyone know of a serious analysis that's been done of the correlation between the volume of Cyber Extortion (ransomware) crime and the dollar value of BTC? It seems pretty clear to us that there is a correlation between BTC closing values and the number of CyX victims and actors we've recorded for the last 3 years, but we're struggling to understand why that would be? 1. Surely the ransom is "calculated" in USD, not BTC, so we wouldn't expect BTC value to impact the level of crime? 2. Surely the proportion of all BTC exchanged for ransom payments would be too small for the volume of ransoms to have an impact on BTC market prices? 3. Might there be a 3rd, independent variable that is impacting both of these trends? Has anyone seen any work published on this before? #ransomware #CyX #btc #cybercrime #statistics

Help! Does anyone know of some work that has been done looking at #crime and #cryptocurrency developments? We are currently wondering about the association we see with #ransomware victims and BTC closing prices. 🤔 #cybercrime #financialcrime #btc #ransomware

Big News! The #LockBit #ransomware group, known for a four-year spree of #hacking and #extortion targeting thousands of entities worldwide and amassing millions in ransoms, has been significantly disrupted by an international law enforcement operation called Operation Cronos. Led by the UK's National Crime Agency (NCA) with support from 10 global forces, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and Europol, this operation infiltrated LockBit's systems, seized its infrastructure, and arrested members in various countries. LockBit, identified as the most harmful ransomware group in recent years, responsible for 25% of last year's ransomware attacks, has seen its operations halt. The group, which began in 2019, operated on a ransomware-as-a-service model, with affiliates carrying out attacks. Law enforcement's intervention has led to the seizure of LockBit's infrastructure, the dark-web leak site, source code, around 11,000 domains and servers, details of its members, and over 200 cryptocurrency wallets. This comprehensive action has rendered LockBit redundant, marking a significant victory against #cybercrime and potentially tempering the ransomware threat landscape. However, the permanency of this impact still needs to be seen.
