2022 Troon Vineyard Grenache Blanc Extended Lees Aging, Rogue Valley, OR: Retail $40. Responsible Bottle (not weighed). Under DIAM5. When the folks at Troon decide to do something a bit different, they really don’t “fudge” around, and this is a case in point, for sure. Straw to yellow in color, with fresh and bright tree fruit (yellow apple, fresh peach), a saline note, and perhaps a bit of crushed seashell. The palate is tart and layered with oodles of weight, resulting in an incredibly sexy mouthfeel. Whoa. The lengthy finish only adds to an already stellar wine. A whopping 17 months in neutral French oak. Whoa. Outstanding. 94 Points. 2020 Troon Vineyard Tannat, Applegate Valley, OR: Retail $45. 76% Tannat, 24% Malbec. Under DIAM. A couple of weeks ago, I wrote an article about how little Tannat I have tried. While it is true that I have not had a ton of the variety, I have had more than I may have intimated in that post. Some of that Tannat has come from Troon Vineyard in Southern Oregon. When I visited the winery last week, Craig Camp, the GM at Troon, handed me this bottle after having read my article. It has been a few years since I have tried the Troon iteration of Tannat (they do not make a ton), but I hope it will not take as long for the next as this is delicious. Dark in color and in aromas: plenty of blackberry, fresh plum, even a touch of cassis. The palate is also surprisingly fruity (given my history with Madiran), but also classically tart, a near-perfect balance. Some subtle tannins on the finish suggest some life ahead, but, really, this is fantastic now. Whoa. Outstanding. 93 Points.

Meet Steven Schmidt from the Middle Moselle. 1.5 hectares of dedication to the traditional Mosel principles and methods with a committed striving for top-quality. Read more here: https://lnkd.in/eGJGMiSk OUR PHILOSOPHY high-quality | wild | traditional The wine manufactory is a small, exclusively organic farm located in the heart of the Middle Moselle. Our personal goal is to produce authentic, terroir-driven wines with as little intervention in the environment and nature as possible. We focus on old vines in steep slopes, which, with an age beyond forty years, promise the highest quality. The emphasis here is clearly on quality over quantity. With great attention to detail and respect for tradition and heritage, we preserve our old vines like small treasures. A large part of the vineyard is still cultivated using the old Mosel vine-training method, some of which has been practiced for nearly 80 years. All plots are harvested with the utmost care and exclusively by selective hand-picking in multiple stages. Gentle in further processing, we avoid all chemically or artificially produced additives as well as industrial production methods. Our credo is, "Produce vintages, not reproduce them." Every vintage is uniquely shaped by abiotic and biotic factors. Our mission is to make these special characteristics and nuances come to life for you. Thus, we always embrace nature to perfectly express the distinct features of each terroir in harmony. In this way, we succeed in creating wines that are typical of both the location and the vintage. Organically certified, sustainable, and authentic. #Mosel #Moselwein #Riesling #Germanwine #coolclimatewine #coolclimatewinesummit #vineyard #moselwines #greatwine #coolclimatewines

Label of the Week! “Heroes” Vineyard has two distinct but linked wine labels. The “Heroes” label is for the wines produced from their original 10-acre vineyard, located in the Otways and planted in 1998, while the Anti-Hero label covers wines made from fruit sourced elsewhere. “Heroes” was named after the David Bowie song of the same name – the quotation marks are used both in the song and on the label to indicate a degree of irony. There is sometimes a certain triumphalism in the wine industry, and the name is partly a mockery of itself and other winemakers. However, the label also features subtly embossed raindrops, which could represent a real hero for the winery, as the region’s natural rainfall is essential to the non-irrigated and organically run vineyard. Anti-Hero acts as the winery’s second label and is also meant to be a bit tongue-in-cheek. A typical anti-hero is usually a character who is essentially a ‘good guy’ that you root for, but who may lack the usual idealism or other characteristics of your typical hero. It shows the original label being defaced by graffiti – the characters are the winemaker’s children. Label details: Producer – “Heroes” Vineyard Varietal – Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir Region – Geelong, Victoria Photographer – Mel Cordon Printing – Offset Substrate – Bright White Felt Embellishments – Emboss, High Build Screen https://lnkd.in/gAVWnujW

NUMBER 3: RAPAURA SPRINGS Sauvignon Blanc Marlborough Reserve 2022 93 points | $19 | New Zealand New Zealand Sauvignon Blancs have become a go-to source for some of the most consistent expressions of terroir at affordable prices. In the hands of a talented winemaker such as Matt Thomson and a tradition of family-run farming by the founding Neylon and Wiffin families, Rapaura Springs pushes the limits of quality in this category to a new level. Grapes for this wine come from the Dillons Point and Wairau Valley subregions and are immediately pressed after harvest to minimize skin contact (and bitter phenolics). The juice is cool-fermented in stainless steel to preserve the fresh fruit flavors, and Thomson selects a variety of yeast strains to emphasize texture and complexity. Note the symbol on Rapaura Springs’ label: a circle of rocks that represents the spring in the estate vineyard. Water from the snowy mountaintops of the Southern Alps gradually travels beneath the region’s rivers, filtering through bedrock before bubbling back up. 12,000 cases imported.—M.W.

Blending tradition with innovation - the art of winemaking at Foothills Vineyards is an approach deeply rooted in tradition, yet vividly highlighted by our embrace of modern techniques. This blend of old and new is the essence of how we create wines with distinct and memorable flavour profiles. Our journey begins in the vineyard, where we believe that exceptional wine is born from exceptional fruit. Each vine is touched approximately 12 times throughout the year, ensuring optimal health and quality. This meticulous care is a testament to our traditional approach: understanding and nurturing the vines to yield the best possible fruit for our cellar. Once the grapes are ready for harvest, our methods take a contemporary turn. Tasting repeatedly, we determine the perfect moment for harvest based on a combination of taste and detailed lab analyses of sugar, pH, and acidity levels. This fusion of sensory evaluation and scientific precision allows us to make informed decisions that respect the integrity of the fruit. In the cellar, the focus shifts to hygiene and timing - key elements where modern techniques particularly shine. Every step, from pressing the grapes to deciding when they go to barrel, is guided by cleanliness and timely action, with lab results reviewed weekly to keep our processes on track. What truly sets us apart is our collaborative spirit. Winemaking at Foothills is not a secretive art but a shared endeavour. We taste together, plan together, and evolve together, always open to new ideas and improvements. This collaborative approach ensures that every bottle of Foothills wine is a product of time-honoured methods as well as collective innovation. This marriage of traditional viticulture and modern winemaking techniques allows us to craft wines that reflect both the rich heritage of our vines and the dynamic character of contemporary winemaking. The result? Wines that are not only high in quality but rich in story and complexity. The concluding paragraph in the Lodi Growers post on "Why Lodi produces delicate, fragrant styles of red wine" (re https://lnkd.in/g_fYtq7R ): "Reality is different from what you read in books. Warm-climate red wines can indeed be more delicate, finely scented, and just as zesty in acidity as cooler-climate wines. It is specific terroir, the adaptation of cultivars, and the intervention of growers and vintners that make the only differences that count."
