Inventor spotlight: Masoud Agah My research to put it in simple form, we are trying to make a dog-on-a-chip. In other words, we want to create an artificial nose with extreme capability for air quality monitoring including but not limited to occupational settings, for disease diagnosis through body odor and breath analysis, for detecting and saving lives during natural disasters, and many other applications. We have used novel #semiconductor micromachining techniques combined with #nanotechnology and #3dprinting to develop unique chips and integrated microsystems capable of capturing gaseous samples and identify the constituents of gas mixtures.

We were excited to organise the first workshop on 2D materials at TU/e that brought together researchers from TU/e, imec, ASML, ARCNL, TU Delft, Aixtron, and Oxford Instruments. The workshop is part of our new Future Chips Flagship interfacing research efforts between materials & processes and chips.  Workshop was structured in three parts: short pitches, separate group brainstorming sessions, and a final group discussion. The main objective was to identify industry challenges related to 2D materials, including growth, characterization, and device fabrication. Some interesting discussions were focused on: ·      manufacturability and process development: discussion on the feasibility of integrating 2D materials into complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) technology and key challenges to enable 2D materials as the channel material for future generation of transistors.  ·      dielectric and contact interfaces: at the device level, controlling dielectric and contact interfaces emerged as a challenge. The self-passivating nature of 2D material surfaces requires precise fabrication methods to achieve optimal dielectric deposition ·      benchmarking performance: understanding defects, characterizing defect density and thermal transport remain to be investigated and their impact on device performance Overall, the workshop offered rich discussions and identifying common interests where academia and industry can collaborate together. #FutureChipsFlagship, #2Dmaterials, #EHCI Eindhoven University of Technology

🦿 An equally inspiring and impressive milestone for Delft start-up Gyromotics. The YES!Delft resident introduced Nova, their unique modular prosthetic foot for children. The prosthetic can 'grow' with the child thanks to the innovative design. Gyromotics developed the prosthetic in close tandem with Sportinnovator and a consortium of partners, of which Delft University of Technology is part. 💪🏼 With valuable input from Team Para Atletiek, the faculties of TU Delft | Mechanical Engineering and TU Delft | Aerospace Engineering went on to extensively test materials. The result is a unique, robust new prosthetic design that allows children to both walk and run - going much further than existing prosthetics. 💡 Co-founder Guido Hendriks hopes Nova can help foster a mentality change among health professionals and parents alike. "Existing prosthetics often just don't fit well enough. Emily Bezerra from our research unit Advanced Sensors and Electronics Technologies (ASET) won the best poster award at the European Materials Research Society (E-MRS) spring meeting 2024 that took place in Strasbourg, France, on May 27. 🎉 The poster was awarded at the “Progress in unconventional electronics and sustainable flexible sensing technologies” symposium and in the “Electronics, Magnetics and Photonics” program. In our work, we developed a Disposable Fully Aerosol-Jet printed transparent sensor for humidity monitoring. 🌿 Inspired by “sustainable electronics”, the metal-free sensor facilitates a fast and low-material-usage fabrication of sustainable sensors for humidity monitoring, which is of particular interest for applications in healthcare, smart packaging, and agriculture. The sensor is printed on both rigid and flexible biodegradable substrates with high resolution printed lines of below 15 micrometers. MIT RESEARCHERS PIONEER BREAKTHROUGH INTEGRATION TECHNIQUE FOR FRAGILE 2D MATERIALS, UNLEASHING ENHANCED ELECTRONIC FUNCTIONALITIES Researchers at MIT and other institutions have successfully addressed the challenge of integrating fragile two-dimensional (2D) materials into electronic devices, paving the way for enhanced electronic properties. These ultrathin materials, only a few atoms thick, demonstrate remarkable abilities in efficiently carrying electric charge, promising advancements in next-gen electronic devices. Conventional fabrication techniques, involving chemicals, high temperatures, or destructive processes, often damage these delicate 2D structures when integrated into devices like computer chips. In response, MIT researchers have introduced an innovative method that enables the integration of 2D materials into devices in a single step, maintaining pristine surfaces and defect-free interfaces.... 🌟 Exciting News! 🌟 I am thrilled to announce that my doctoral thesis work has been published in the Wiley-Advanced Intelligent Systems journal! 🎉 📜 Title: "Design and Scalable Fast Fabrication of Biaxial Fabric Pouch Motors for Soft Robotic Artificial Muscle Applications" 📈 Journal: Advanced Intelligent Systems (Q1, Impact Factor 7.4) 🔍 Abstract: Soft pouch motors, engineered to mimic the natural movements of skeletal muscles, play a crucial role in advancing robotics and exoskeleton development. However, the fabrication techniques often involve multistage processes; they lack soft sensing capabilities and are sensitive to cutting and damage. This work introduces a new textile-based pouch motors with the capacity for biaxial actuation and capacitive sensory functions, achieved through the application of computerized knitting technology using ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene yarn (Spectra) and conductive silver yarns. This method enables the rapid and scalable mass fabrication of robust pouch motors. The resulting pouch motors exhibit maximum lifting capacity of 10 kg, maximum contraction of 53.3% along the y-axis, and transverse extension of 41.18% along the x-axis at 50 kPa pressure. Finite element analysis closely matches the experimental data. The capacitance signals in relation to contraction motion are well suited for detecting air pressure levels and hold promise for applications requiring robotic control. Notably, it effectively elevates an ankle joint simulator at a 20° angle, highlighting its potential for applications such assisting individuals with foot drop.
