🍗 I gave a talk on dietary fat for fitness enthusiasts at my local fitness centre - look at this data on chicken fat from their breasts and thighs as analysed in this 2014 paper. 🍗 At the very least it should pose as interesting... 🍗 Interesting how many in the field demean chicken because it's an animal product and yet the relative percentage of fat contained in them is 70% mono- and polyunsaturated and 30% saturated... 🍗 The nutritional space still debates whether or not omega-6 fats are bad too and that's another conversation, but basically no one debates the dangers in monounsaturated fats and often promote their healthy properties on cardiometabolic profiles. 🍗 And here we are with chicken fat having 44% of it's total coming from monounsaturates. #chicken #healthyfats #dietaryfat #nutrition

🤔 Question for the practitioners and the clients out there: Is person centred care susceptible to the idea that the practitioner with the more assumed health knowledge is simply steering the client in the direction they want them to go, and then the term is used as a means to presume it goes in the direction the client is led to believe?

Cardiometabolic disease is a common area of management for lifestyle medicine practitioners. The term sounds scary, but it isn't that tricky it breaks down to this idea, but we can add a touch more to it: "Cardiometabolic syndrome (CMS) is a complex interplay of metabolic dysregulation, cardiovascular disease (CVD), and diabetes risk factors." Think of the involved organs the term stands for to help look at what can be managed with the lifestyle. It references the heart and vascular tissues, it then references anything metabolic - so think of hormones, the endocrine organs, the liver, the pancreas, the muscles and the fat tissues that all have strong metabolic tie-ins (other organs/tissues all undergo metabolic functions but these areas merit attention with lifestyle management and the term itself). The terrific visual below from Neel Parek and colleagues explains the management of this syndrome very nicely below and what can be dialled in on right away, as each of these factors impact the above listed tissues and organs. The take away: Never underestimate the impact of lifestyle of improving these areas. Genetics aspects are something we can seldom modify (sparing epi-genetic phenomena) and they make up a small (but significant part of the circle) but lifestyle considerations can be life-altering and seriously improve the disability adjusted life years (DALY's) of a person. 🔑 A brand new research publication authored by Dr Peter Tuchin with acknowledged cases from Dr Steven Brown, and review in the past five years looking at case reports on spinal manipulation (SMT) and cervical artery dissection (CAD) - the conclusion: "The chiropractic profession should be aware of inappropriate case report conclusions which incorrectly imply chiropractic manipulation as a cause of CAD." 🔑 This looked at cases reported between 2019-2024 and creates significantly more questions around the methods in which many of these cases are designed and presumed to be attributed to a singular profession, and also using poor temporal inference. 🔑 There are four very useful tables throughout the study to closely investigate as a reader while the body text importantly sets the context. Take a look at table 1 below and the anatomy of the vertebral artery in this instance, sadly there is still a clear bias in reporting and an even more unfortunate situation that often defames much of a well-trained profession on very limited proof. 👦 Some really large learning experiences and even more questions from a great conversations had on men's health between Dr. Zac Seidler and host Ray Swann on the Understanding Boys podcast. 👨👦 Thank you both for some thought provoking dialogue. Two main things (amongst so much) shared that really resonated with me today: #1 That the concept of reciprocal self-disclosure is so important in multiple settings with people that we speak with. Reciprocal self-disclosure diverges from typically standard clinical interactions whereby the treating healthcare provider sits back and says nothing while remaining professional and not mutually engaging with their related stories and human experiences. #2 A simple ALEC acronym that can be applied in communication and used for anyone to engage with another person who might require support: A = Ask L = Listen E = Encourage Action C = Check-in (review) Simple tools, keeping otherwise 'forbidden clinical knowledge' open, easy and accessible that anyone can consider and use to help one another out. 🙏 Thanks both, was a great listen.

Does workplace health and safety cause some confusion for you like it does for many of us? I just finished watching this hour long overview on the process hosted by Employment Hero and Sanam Ahmadzadeh Salmani and delivered by Simon Obee. It covers the basics and helped to situate where we sit in the scheme of workplace health and safety, both the physical and psychosocial. Improved human posture in the absence of significant disease is not well associated with increased levels of physical activity in people. "It may seem logical to assume that engaging in PA would also improve posture, yet little is currently known about this important aspect of human health." We can consider that a persons level of physical activity is not very strongly linked to their residual posture or improved posture. "A possible explanation for these findings is that multiple biopsychosocial factors may impact human body posture. Although there are many known benefits of PA, the effects of PA alone on posture were not strong in isolation." What was taken from all this? Stay active anyway, avoid excessive sedentary and sitting-like behaviours and don't worry too much about improving your posture with exercise alone, instead consider your entire lifestyle and how that reflects you and your posture in the world.
