We know that rail businesses face challenges when thinking about taking on apprentices. Ultimately, these insecurities or risks prevent many businesses from taking on apprentices. TransPennine Express (TPE) has announced the launch of its first-ever graduate scheme. The scheme offers opportunities for people looking to embark on a rewarding career in the rail industry. 🚂The CRSA Supports Chinnor Heritage Railway: Developing Skills While Preserving History! When Princes Risborough Heritage Railway approached the Central Rail Systems Alliance for support on their Chinnor railway line, we saw an excellent opportunity to share our expertise while providing valuable learning experiences for our apprentices. The heritage railway had installed a new line using redundant track panels and planned to operate an auto ballast train ahead of tamping. However, a review by SCO found the track was not yet in a suitable condition for this operation. The CRSA stepped in, providing resources and tools to rectify twist faults and ensure the line was compliant for the auto ballast train. This collaboration not only supported the heritage railway but also provided an invaluable opportunity for young engineers from the Aston Depot to gain hands-on experience in a less time-pressured environment. The work covered around 900 yards of track, with the team completing 350 yards in just seven hours. Ben Johnson and his North West and Central team will continue to work with the heritage railway to provide further support, guidance, and training as part of future plans. This project exemplifies The CRSA’s commitment to being a teaching organisation. By sharing our knowledge and fostering development, we’re not only preserving heritage railways but also shaping the next generation of rail professionals. More exciting news from Scotland's capital this week! In a joint consortium with Bilfinger UK, Siemens Mobility has been awarded an eleven-year contract extension for the maintenance of Edinburgh Trams infrastructure, ensuring the network's standards are upheld through 2035. This £44.7 million extension ensures the continuous upkeep of the tram infrastructure, enhances the network's efficiency, and shows significant commitment to the local workforce by supporting jobs and apprenticeships. The contract encompasses the upkeep of approximately 18.5 kilometres of track, including the recent network extension to Newhaven, marking the return of tram services to this part of the city for the first time in over 65 years. As UKTram, we celebrate the continued partnership between Siemens Mobility and Edinburgh Trams, which exemplifies the sustainable development and innovation in urban mobility that we strive to promote across the UK. In a significant push towards a greener future, the Albanese Labor Government has announced an expansion of the New Energy Apprenticeships Program, empowering the skilled force imperative for Australia's pivot to a net-zero economy. This strategic move is pivotal in nurturing the talent that will propel industries crucial for a sustainable transformation, like housing, automotive, and manufacturing, towards embracing clean energies and advancing technologies. The program modifications, effective as of June 1st, 2024, will dismantle barriers, allowing a broader spectrum of apprenticeships to benefit, including those in the burgeoning spheres of hydroelectricity, solar power, battery installations, and care for electric vehicles. These sectors are the cornerstone of our environmental and economic wellbeing, and this policy fine-tuning will bolster Australia's aggressive agenda to facilitate more environmentally efficient housing. Apprentice mechanics specializing in Electric Vehicles, a crucial segment of the auto market, now find the program within their reach, aligning with the nation's commitment to electrification and supported by investments in charging infrastructures. By extending up to $10,000 in support to apprentices, the initiative seeks to alleviate financial burdens, especially during the critical initial years, while simultaneously fostering skill development across 40 distinct occupations. Remarkably, over 2,210 apprentices have embarked on this journey since the program's commencement, a testament to its success and the enthusiasm kindled among Australians seeking to contribute to our environmental objectives. This program exemplifies the government's dual focus on addressing climate change and tackling the acute skills shortage that hampers our progress. Australia’s skills shortage is only getting more acute as we decarbonise our economy and demand for specialist skills increases. For the energy transition alone Jobs and Skills Australia has assessed that we will need an extra 32,000 electricians by 2030 and at least another 80,000 by 2050 – these are big numbers. The Governments announcement that the New Energy Apprenticeships Program will be expanded is a step in the right direction. The broad definition of sectors with exposure to clean energy as well as the inclusion of construction and advanced manufacturing is welcomed by business. We need an apprenticeship and traineeship system that is seen as an attractive and valuable pathway to employment, has the confidence of industry, and builds a pipeline of skilled workers who can adapt to future labour market needs. The BCA looks forward to continuing to work with Government on reforming our skills system.
