How to handle vapors containing dichloromethane (DCM)? 𝐃𝐢𝐜𝐡𝐥𝐨𝐫𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐞's volatility and its ability to dissolve a wide range of organic compounds make it a valuable solvent for numerous chemical processes. Its 𝐦𝐚𝐢𝐧 𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐚𝐬 𝐚 𝐬𝐨𝐥𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐭 include: 🔹Extraction of caffeine compounds in the coffee industry 🔹Solvent for tetrabutylammonium borohydride 🔹Solvent in various reactions in the pharmaceutical industry 🔹Solvent in polarographic techniques for nickel determination 🔹Extraction of metal complexes 🔹Paint remover 🔹Pesticide 🔹Lipid extraction However, its 𝐯𝐨𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 and 𝐞𝐧𝐯𝐢𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐭 drive the search for safer alternatives where applicable. While there are various techniques for removing it in the gas phase, 𝐜𝐫𝐲𝐨𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐜 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐥𝐢𝐪𝐮𝐢𝐝 𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐠𝐞𝐧 is particularly suitable for cases with low flow rates and high concentrations. This technique involves using the vaporization of liquid nitrogen as a cooling medium to condense DCM vapors on the surface of the condenser. The evaporated nitrogen can be reused in the customer's network. To gain an overview of the conventional applications of dichloromethane and similar conventional solvents, along with their less conventional alternatives, I came across this interesting review by Shah et al. Published in "Biomass Conversion and Biorefinery." An example reported is in the 𝐨𝐥𝐞𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐬 𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐬 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧, where 𝟐-𝐌𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐲𝐥 𝐭𝐞𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐡𝐲𝐝𝐫𝐨𝐟𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐧 (2-MeTHF) emerges as a superior, green alternative to dichloromethane and toluene at high temperatures. Not only is 2-MeTHF biomass-derived, making it a renewable resource, but it also boasts biodegradability. 2-MeTHF stands out as an effective replacement for other chemicals like THF and MTBE, showcasing the industry's potential for adopting 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐬𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐬𝐨𝐥𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐬𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬. 💡 Source: P.
