A murky day here in Eindhoven discussing Euro NCAP Safer Trucks. What is clear is DAF know’s about great vision and the part it plays in safe driving. Their camera monitoring systems are amongst the best and will become standard fit. And their Direct Vision is already standard and amongst the best. We like that a lot! We were discussing the new ratings that are launched on the 20th November. We’ve tested trucks from DAF, IVECO, Mercedes, Renault, Scania and Volvo. Have any got 5 stars? Who’s best for Safety? Do NCAP rate CMS with regards to other road users and how other road users use the traditional mirror to be safe when passing HGV's? I worry that this desire to fit cameras instead of traditional mirrors is putting other road users, car drivers, motorcyclists etc at risk because they are unable to see the driver in the mirror when passing a large vehicle. When passing a lorry, you are able to see the driver and where they are looking, see if they have acknowledged you being there or if they are considering a lane change. You may not realise you're doing this, but next time you pass a truck, think about where you're looking. As someone who tests vehicles to UNECE R46 requirements, I fear that the camera system, whilst supposedly improving the driving environment - which as yet I have failed to see how they are because I believe a traditional mirror is far superior, they are reducing the safety for other road users. Whilst they meet all requirements of the Regs, they are unpleasant to use. Who are we trying to protect with these "direct vision" standards? Once again, the industry is paying a price for something that is probably not needed! Training and education is key here, not tec for tec's sake.

Matthew Avery, the anticipation around those new ratings is palpable. DAF's commitment to safety seems solid. Curious about the other brands' performances.
