In one of the Kobetsu Kaizen workshops, I encountered an intriguing question: How many times should one ask "Why" to reach the root cause? Does it always have to be five Whys? The answer is that it doesn’t always have to be five. You should ask "Why" until you reach the root cause. The purpose of asking multiple Whys is to encourage deep thinking and ensure you address the root cause of the problem, rather than assuming that symptoms are the root cause. Addressing only symptoms often leads to the problem recurring. There may be cases where you need to ask "Why" up to nine times to get to the root cause, while for some problems, four Whys might suffice. Identifying the correct root cause is crucial for setting effective countermeasures. The root cause of the problems are usually tied to a lack of standards, not following standards, or having incorrect standards, rather than individual faults. A pro tip for verifying your 5 Whys analysis is to ask "Why" downward and "Therefore" upward to establish a clear cause-and-effect chain. Keep practicing the 5 Whys and validate with facts on the actual gemba, rather than conducting the analysis only in a conference room or at your desk without validation. Do you face any challenges in performing 5 Whys analysis? What are they? Any other thoughts are also welcome. #Lean #KobetsuKaizen #5Why #ProblemSolving

Lean mantra: "A place for everything, and everything in its place". Seiton (set in order) is the second 'S' in 5S Lean Methodology. It is about organising your work area so that everything has a designed place. Seiton seems simple in theory, but full commitment is key during execution. Seiton requires analysis on: - Workflow - Storage need - Safety concerns - Used tools/Materials Top tip to implement Seiton: "Install shadow boards". When you set in order, you ensure all items left in the work area are organised. Each item should be easy to find, use, and return in line with the physical workflow. Your operators will be able to see immediately if things are out of place and put them back into order as soon as possible. #lean #leanmanufacturing #5s #seiton #productivity #leanthinking #industrialengineering #blackbelt #optimization #optimisation

Kaizen is often seen as the cornerstone of organisational excellence... the building block of all lean manufacturing projects. The goal is to pinpoint and resolve issues at the source whilst creating and maintaining a culture of collaboration. This is a process of discipline, implementing practical ways of setting goals, implementing actions, monitoring results and adjusting to ensure that even the smallest activities make a positive change of improvement... such as supporting the cycle of plan-do-check-act (PDCA). We understand that sometimes all you need is a top-up or refresh on selected knowledge, which is why we have split our Accelerated Route to Lean Manufacturing into bite-size topics that provide practical insights and examples that make a massive difference to your organisation. 🕤 1-Day workshop - 9.00 am to 4.00 pm. 🏆 £395 +VAT per delegate. 🚀 Embrace Imperfection: The Power of Rough and Ready Kaizen Trials 🚀 In the pursuit of continuous improvement, the Kaizen philosophy teaches us a vital lesson: the value of action over perfection. One of the pivotal practices in this realm is the implementation of 'rough and ready' Kaizen trials, a strategy championed by the Toyota Production System (TPS). 🔧 What are Rough and Ready Kaizen Trials? These trials are all about making quick, iterative changes instead of waiting for a 'perfect' solution. The idea is simple yet powerful: implement improvements quickly, learn from the immediate results, and adjust. This approach helps avoid the pitfalls of "perfectly inaccurate" solutions that are theoretically flawless but fail in practical scenarios. 🎯 Why It Matters: Speed of Implementation: Quick trials mean faster learning and adaptation. Practical Insights: Real-world application brings out unforeseen challenges and opportunities, leading to more robust solutions. Cultural Transformation: Encourages a proactive mindset across the organization, fostering innovation and resilience. 💡 Takeaway: Innovation isn't born from waiting for the perfect answer but from the courage to try, fail, and improve. Let's move away from the paralysis of perfection and towards a culture of dynamic, effective change. Dive into the 'rough and ready' approach. The best solutions are not those that are perfect on paper but those that evolve through real challenges.
