In hiring front of house staff, I focus on a key but often overlooked skill: Storytelling. Good storytellers are typically good listeners as well—essential skills for delivering remarkable hospitality. During interviews, I assess whether a candidate's listening inspires others to continue sharing. I also have candidates share a meaningful personal or professional story, looking for clear narrative structure and emotional resonance retaining the listener's interest. Can they read the room and adapt their tale to suit the mood and audience? This ability can elevate a simple meal into an unforgettable encounter. I’m not just looking for bartenders and servers; I’m after someone who can weave narrative magic, forge genuine connections with our guests, and capture the essence of our bar. While it's possible to teach adults storytelling, it’s a tough slog. I prefer hiring those who already excel in this area.
