Joint Statement from Truman National Security Project and Truman Center The Truman National Security Project and Truman Center for National Policy strongly condemn the attempted assassination of former President Trump and all political violence. We call for a transparent and speedy investigation. As the investigation proceeds, we urge restraint and renewed efforts to bridge ideological divides. We also advise caution in an environment of widespread misinformation and disinformation. Now is a time for healing, not further division or a rush to judgment. Rejecting polarization and violent rhetoric, and embracing unity, is vital to the health of our union and our national security. As Americans, we share a common belief that violence has no place in our electoral system or our democracy.

On the 21st of November 2023, I made this statement during the formal launching ceremony of the *TRIPARTITE COMMITTEE* The resulting inter-Party dialogue is arguably the most peaceful and multistakeholder out-of-court settlement. It is also proving to us that as political leaders of our time, we must advise ourselves that not all fights require guns, violence, knives, broken bottles, ‘mammy coss’, plenty spin and political masking and hypocrisy. Good fights require only wisdom, tolerance, mutual respect and patriotism. Experience suggests that there are no easy, catch-all solutions to the difficulties we face in deciding how to handle deceitful or dissembling politics and economic management. There is however no room for complacency or despair. We are making history. #SierraLeone ##SaloneX https://lnkd.in/e69qD7ti

When I mention I research misinformation and information distortion, people often ask if I study *health* misinformation. Yes, of course, I say. But we're not so lucky that the spreaders of mis/disinformation stop, think, and say "hey, that's not in my lane" before they spread falsehoods and misleading content about health or other topics. As this report details so clearly, harmful speech comes in various forms that don't easily fall into definitions and categories researchers like to use. Still, such harmful speech can have real and significant impact on folks working on the front lines—in healthcare and in UN peacekeeping missions alike—and needs to be better understood. This report is a very helpful step in that direction and worth a deep read.
About a year ago, I was asked by the UN Department of Peace Operations and the Office of the Special Adviser on the Prevention of Genocide to write a report on the overlaps and differences between hate speech, disinformation and misinformation, with a particular emphasis on conflict settings. I learned so much in the process, and it caused me to reflect deeply on my own work and practice over the years. We just launched the report and I hope people find it useful as a catalyst for more discussion about the importance and limitations of legal frameworks for speech, particularly in the chaos of war. https://lnkd.in/eH3P3kzh

"Violence can only be concealed by a lie, and the lie can only be maintained by violence." - Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn. Why does the US government continue to support Israel👇, a regime with documented human rights abuses, potentially even genocide, as recognized by the International Court of Justice? Why does it curtail its citizens' freedom of speech and expression? Those orchestrating such violence often occupy positions of leadership, entangled in corrupt political systems where power and influence are bought and sold. Many politicians prioritize personal ideologies over the welfare of the American people, lacking the character and competence to uphold the constitution and laws. Instead, they manipulate the system to serve their own pathological interests.

Every year, July 17th is celebrated as World Day for International Justice to recognize the importance of strengthening international justice systems and also to promote the rights of the victims. It also marks the anniversary of the adoption of the Rome Statute on July 17, 1998, the founding treaty of the International Criminal Court (ICC). The ICC was established in 2002 and is a permanent, intergovernmental court established to prosecute individuals for the four core international crimes: genocide, crimes against humanity, war crimes, and crime of aggression. These systemic injustices create a situation where many people have no choice but to flee their homes, often ending up forcibly displaced. We at MAP work to legally empower forcibly displaced persons, such that those seen as 'human rights violations made visible', can lead a life of dignity, safety and security, no matter where they come from. #worlddayforinternationaljustice
