Hey LinkedIn fam! 🚀💰 Have you heard about the recent trend of defense contractors avoiding projects that could potentially result in financial losses? It’s been all over the news lately, and it’s definitely a topic worth discussing. According to a recent article by the Wall Street Journal, U.S. defense contractors have been making it clear to investors that they won’t be chasing projects that come with a high risk of cost overruns. This comes at a time when global conflicts are driving a surge in orders for advanced weapons, presenting some major opportunities for these companies. But why the sudden reluctance to pursue potentially lucrative projects? Well, it seems that some companies have already experienced significant losses in their dealings with the Pentagon, and they’re looking to avoid similar situations in the future. Understandably, they want to protect their bottom line and ensure that they’re making smart, strategic decisions for their businesses. This cautious approach is certainly understandable, especially given the complex nature of defense contracts and the potential for unforeseen complications to arise. It’s a reminder that even in a booming industry, it’s crucial for companies to carefully assess the risks and rewards of taking on certain projects. In the world of defense contracting, where the stakes are high and the competition is fierce, it’s no surprise that companies are being selective about the projects they pursue. It’s all about striking the right balance between seizing opportunities for growth and protecting against potential losses. So, what do you think about this trend? Do you believe that defense contractors are making the right call by avoiding risky projects, or do you think they should be more willing to take on challenges in pursuit of potential rewards? I’d love to hear your thoughts! And if you want to dig deeper into this topic, be sure to check out the full article by Doug Cameron and Drew FitzGerald in the Wall Street Journal. It’s a fascinating look at the dynamics of the defense industry and the strategic decisions being made by some of the biggest players in the game. Let’s keep the conversation going! #DefenseContractors #CostOverruns #StrategicDecisions #GlobalConflicts #procurement #military #senate #congress #pentagon

One of my greatest concerns when promoting work measurement is that people will incorrectly use the new data they capture. All too often, leaders use daily work measures to create output competition between work teams. Such competition can have very negative quality, environmental, and safety consequences. The Port Chicago Disaster of 1944, which killed over 300 people and accounted for 15% of the total Black WWII fatalities, provides a classic example of this. Additionally, the incident reflects the impact of investigator bias and management manipulation of outcomes. It is a great dialogue creator - to what degree might similar problems exist in one or more of your workplaces? https://lnkd.in/g9FenqzH #incidentinvestigation #rootcauseanalysis #workplacesafety #healthyworkplace

"#Burke allegedly steered a $355,000 #Pentagon contract to a small workforce training firm — described unhelpfully in the Justice Department’s description as “Company A." Less than a year later he took a job at Company A in exchange for a $500,000 annual salary and 100,000 stock options...But this is just part of a pernicious system of corrupt dealings and #profiteering in Pentagon #procurement practices, and much of it is completely legal. It involves #campaigncontributions from major #weaponscontractors to key members of #Congress with the most power to determine the size and shape of the Pentagon budget, and job #blackmail, in which companies place facilities in as many congressional districts as possible and then stand ready to accuse members of cutting local jobs if they vote against a weapons program, no matter how misguided or dysfunctional it may be. It also involves the #revolvingdoor, in which arms industry executives often do stints in top national security posts, even serving as secretary of defense, or, on the other side of the revolving door, when high ranking Pentagon and military officials go to work for weapons makers when they leave government service. In fact, this is, by far, the most common path for retired senior military officers." #lobbyists https://lnkd.in/eUZyez3f

Good insight, Jerry! Catching up with China on critical mineral supply chains will require continued financial support from the DPA Title III program for many years to come. Every time U.S. policy makers and DOD officials consider shrinking this program, they should remember China not only dominates these supply chains now, but they continue to ensure this trend continues by dramatically outpacing U.S. investments. The cost of investing now is far cheaper than the alternative.
My latest on the #defenseproductionact in Defense News today for your consideration. The U.S. House Committee on Financial Services is holding a hearing on #DPA reauthorization tomorrow. It is critical to keep the DPA focused on #defense and there are important ways that the authority can be strengthened to help ensure success in future responses to national emergencies and industrial mobilization efforts. I will be discussing the last part tomorrow at the Naval Postgraduate School's #acquisition #research symposium tomorrow so look for more on that soon!! #govcon #governmentcontracting Greg and Camille Baroni Center for Government Contracting George Mason University – Costello College of Business Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Acquisition & Sustainment Acquisition Research Program at Naval Postgraduate School Stephanie Halcrow BENJAMIN MCMARTIN Matt MacGregor Pete Modigliani Stephen Rodriguez Jeff Bialos Bill Greenwalt Jeffrey Nadaner Laura Taylor-Kale, PhD Anthony Di Stasio Nicoletta Giordani Ajay Vinze https://lnkd.in/eFxqsAEM
