Tis the season for #internships! If you know a student, this episode is for them, especially if they haven’t secured an internship, yet. We didn’t get to the concept of “temp work,” but temping for a summer can be just as valuable as an internship. Students can often get exposed to various businesses and industries to get a better sense of what business #culture would be the best fit for them. This is extremely important to #GenZ and it shouldn’t be overlooked. If your student doesn’t have an internship yet, make sure they: - connect with their advisor, career counselor, and/or career development center for support. They will have to make an appointment, so get on it! - keep checking Handshake or other employment platform that their school uses; - check Idealist.org for opportunities; - reach out to local staffing agencies that do temporary placement. They’ll have to submit their information, go through an interview and testing process (like a typing test to figure out their type speed, accuracy, etc.), and then the recruiters will have a better idea of what temp jobs they can handle. Also, be sure to go over workplace professionalism basics with your student. How many internships did you do? My 16 year old son will be doing 10-12 mini internships this school year. They are called "Schnupperwochen" and I'm in love with the idea. The Swiss school system has its flaws. One of which is they push kids very young to decide what they want to do as careers. But if you aren't sure at 16, they have this option: Half school, half internships. It should be amazing, and American school and businesses should consider the option. Maybe not as dramatic as a whole school year worth of them, but facilitating mini internships with high school students. It would benefit everyone. https://lnkd.in/g9y2pr8y

Don't ask whether an unpaid internship is worth it. Ask what experience you'd gain working at a company that is either: A) so inept it has to hire workers for free to survive B) so greedy it hires workers for free to boost profits
