US researchers propose adding a new traffic light to help autonomous vehicles (AVs) move in convoys, reducing congestion. Dr. Ali Hajbabaie of North Carolina State University explains that this extra signal would guide AVs through intersections more efficiently. Currently, AVs follow manual traffic, but the new signal would allow AVs to move in groups, cutting delays. Research shows a significant reduction in congestion with 30-40% AVs on the road. A novel integrated stabilization and path tracking control framework, which includes the combined-slip effect and wheel dynamics, is developed for safe autonomous navigation of unmanned ground vehicles (recently publication in IEEE Transactions on Intelligent Vehicles). The loss of cornering forces caused by increased longitudinal slip are considered in the prediction model. The integrated and safety-aware framework with constraint adaptation resolves possible conflicts of the multi-actuated system for lateral stabilization, while trajectory tracking on various surface conditions.
