I really appreciate this guide of "practical solutions for implementing community compensation plans to ensure IPs and LCs are fairly compensated from carbon finance." This is essential for additional, durable projects that actually sequester more carbon and sustain human and non-human nature. My work for Landesa last year aligns. Indeed the term "benefit-sharing" is a misnomer -- communities should receive compensation (or dividends as a co-investor) given their land and resource rights + their costs (of foregone resource use, as well as their stewardship knowledge, time, and labor). Standards, buyers and financiers need to ensure real community consent, align with local resource governance, and ensure fair negotiation of dividends/compensation with communities. Understanding the true costs of implementation and who bears them is key. My work for CLUA also zeroed in on the importance of transparency and accountability mechanisms -- not only monitoring and reporting landscape activities and outcomes, but also payment distribution. Agreements and processes need to be equitable, transparent/traceable, accessible, and aligned with community resource governance structures in the local context. 🌳 💰 Is the private financing of #rewilding a threat to community empowerment? Enjoyed writing for Community Land Scotland on the risks for #NatureRecovery delivering truly integrated and #transformative social, ecological, and climate benefits. ✨ Blog post: https://lnkd.in/eEx2Bvxz As the urgency to tackle the climate and biodiversity crisis grows, private financing is increasingly sought after to support nature recovery projects like rewilding. In Scotland, the government aims to address the £20.4 billion “nature-finance gap” by publishing its Natural Capital Markets Framework, offering guidance and regulatory interventions to develop responsible private investment in natural capital. However, while private financing is essential for upscaling nature recovery efforts, it also raises valid concerns. The over-emphasis on financial returns risks undermining alternative funding models and socio-economic goals, including community empowerment. Prioritising private mechanisms can undermine progress towards delivering community benefits alongside climate and biodiversity objectives, which can (further) marginalise community voices in collective land management and democratic decision-making. Exciting News! The Nevada Clean Energy Fund (NCEF), in partnership with the Walker River Paiute Tribe (WRPT), has been awarded $20 million through the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Community Change Grants Program! This project will bring vital water, energy, and food infrastructure to the Walker River Reservation, supporting 1,200 tribal members. Together, we’ll: -Upgrade 150 homes for energy efficiency and resilience. -Transform the Nutritional Wellness Building into a Community Resilience Hub with solar power, battery storage, and emergency shelter capabilities. -Expand critical water infrastructure as part of the Tribe’s Water System Improvement Project.
