Transportation Security Administration (TSA)’s Post

Great catch! This loaded firearm was detected by TSA officers at Newark International Airport last month. The small handgun fit into a traveler's purse, which she said she rarely uses and meant to hand it off to her husband before she and her daughter arrived at the airport for their flight, but she forgot to do so. Let this be a reminder: if you're traveling with firearms, they must be unloaded, properly and securely packed in your checked bag, and declared with your airline. This is a perfect example of how weapons detection systems might miss this or a cursory check of a bag that is customer based rather than safety based could allow a weapon into a facility. Had it not been for the x ray and the officers attention it could have easily gotten past. Chose your stance, customer service or safety. Conversely consider, are you trying to prevent a mass casualty and accept some less likely mass casualty weapons getting in for the sake of speed and customer satisfaction. It's either zero acceptance or not, companies just have to make the decision and apply based on it.

The TSA have a lot on their plate. Passengers carrying firearms through checkpoints is an ongoing issue and there is always an excuse.

Someone “meaning to” and “forgetting” shouldn’t be entrusted with such great responsibility.

I've argued on an earlier post that they should automatically have to catch the next flight, have bags removed and searched, as part of what's already in place. Not only is it punitive, but it can also scuttle any plan they had to commit other offences on that flight. It was easier to get compliance in the years following 911.
