Security work requires a strong foundation of training and practical experience, with the uniform instilling an expectation of authority and competence. However, due to the minimal requirements for entry, the profession frequently suffers from low pay and perceived low status. The demand for security personnel is surging, but entry requirements are often low, bypassing basic educational or age prerequisites. This lack of worldly or situational acumen makes many security officers enlist out of necessity, a last resort in the face of limited employment opportunities. Physical demands are minimal, with nearly anyone capable of movement being enlisted. The minimal barrier to obtaining a "guard card" in some nations further emphasizes the low entry threshold. Many people perceive cruise ship security jobs as exciting, yet few recognize the challenges they face and the fantastic job they do. Maritime Laws and Regulations: Security personnel must navigate complex maritime laws and regulations governing safety and security procedures at sea. Multicultural Environment: Cruise ships host passengers from diverse backgrounds, cultures and languages, requiring security staff to effectively communicate and manage potential cultural differences. Limited Resources: Unlike land-based security, cruise ship security operates within the confines of a vessel with limited space and resources which can pose challenges during emergencies. Large Passenger Volume: Cruise ships accommodate thousands of passengers, making crowd control and ensuring the safety of a large number of people a significant challenge. Remote Locations: Cruise ships often sail in remote or international waters, making it challenging to access emergency services or law enforcement assistance in case of an incident. Dynamic Environment: The maritime environment is constantly changing due to weather conditions, port visits and other factors, requiring security personnel to adapt quickly to new situations. Security Threats: Cruise ships are not immune to security threats such as theft, smuggling and terrorism, necessitating vigilant surveillance and response measures. Addressing these challenges requires a highly trained and adaptable security team capable of proactively identifying and mitigating risks to ensure the safety and security of passengers and crew.

CPP community what terminology do you use to describe team composition/positions and functions? There are some commonalities between US vs Europe, however there are different terms to describe the similar functions, as does it differ from royal, diplomatic, military, police, government to corporate sector. Mine is hybrid very much influenced by early British literature from the 80’s and US secret service designations. Who is the person within arm’s reach of the principal? TL, BG? When looking after a single protectee, I usually take that role. I call the “shots” for the team and am the primary liaison with the principal. On larger protective details with several teams and principals I will take a more security director role, in charge of moving all the pieces. There are advantages and disadvantages for holding several positions. When the TL is the BG, they are multi-tasking and attention may be diverted from the principal or may not be able to respond to the teams’ requests. That is where the trust and competence of a good 2iC is critical.
