Law students, Those of you with internships have now completed, at least, a full month. Congratulations! Are you keeping a list of what you are doing? If not, do so. It will matter. Have you found a mentor? If so, awesome. It will matter. Have you discovered what you like and don't like about the job or the firm? Be honest. It will matter. I'm going to brag on our interns. They are all over it! As in curb-stomping it. They are eager to get into the action, jumping in when asked to, and showing up. They are part of the team, owning their work, making us better, and demonstrating that they have what it takes to be excellent trial lawyers. Crush July! It matters. #lawstudents

🚀 Excited to share some internship tips for young advocates! 🌟 Active Learning in Court: Instead of sitting outside the court, dive into the proceedings. Listening firsthand teaches you a lot in every case. Learn while you listen! Prepare Your Case: Homework is key! Study your client's file in advance, understand the facts, and know the stages of the case. Preparation is the foundation of success. Dress for Success: First impressions matter. Dress appropriately in a decent outfit, and if you're enrolled, don't forget the band. Courtroom etiquette is a must, as per the dress code by the bar council. Avoid Short Answers: When addressing the judge, steer clear of short answers. Using SMS language is a no-go. Opt for clear and respectful communication. Yes creating a committee or İnternship cell in respected campus will enhance the newly joined 1st and 2nd year students to work on basis of the certain requirements needed by law firms for being a good intern and at a initial stage providing them a proper guidance and way will definitely create a huge impact on their psychology which helps them in building themselves both mentally and physically fit for entering into real opportunities and tasks at a very young stage of their career in Law. #lawfirm #lawstudents #legaleducation #legalinternship

We, as law college students, often seek internships during our first and second years in order to gain practical experience in handling legal documents and court proceedings. However, we often face difficulties in securing good internships, as firms and advocates generally accept students starting from the third year onwards. Even if we do manage to secure an internship, our limited knowledge and experience in the field make it challenging to adapt and perform effectively. In light of this, I have contemplated an alternative solution. What if we establish a student-oriented body or committee within our college that comprises both first and second year students, as well as third and fourth year students, who can provide guidance and support? This body or committee would be led exclusively by first and second year students, who would invite senior students to share their experiences and insights from the practical world. This arrangement would provide a twofold benefit: first and second year students would acquire foundational knowledge directly from their senior peers, without the need for internships, while seniors would have an opportunity to revisit their own learning and relevant experiences, furthering their own growth. I am curious to hear your thoughts on this proposal. Do other colleges already have similar committees or bodies, or do you believe interning in the earlier years would be more advantageous? INTERN TIP OF THE DAY #33 (Part One): 95% of what I do during my internships is role model being a senior lawyer. The rest is technical details that you learn incidentally as you shadow me in my office each day during your intern week. 1. WATCH ME LIKE A HAWK The setup in my office is unique - and effective. I sit at my desk and my two interns sit facing me about 3 metres away, with their laptops in front of them scrutinizing everything I do, from taking phone calls (I use speaker phone so they get both sides), preparing notarial documents (I share my screen), providing legal advice (often with my interns' input), and informally chatting and making small talk with clients. I don't give myself any place to hide (And I don't always get it right). Everything is out in the open, and I answer any questions my interns have. I don't lecture them - they've had enough of that, and that's not what my internships are about. 2. EMOTIONAL MATURITY - GHOSTING A big part of what I model is emotional maturity. My interns see me face difficult or disappointing situations, and they watch how I respond. Literally, they watch my face all the time and can see what I'm thinking. Take the ghosting I get from clients. This is never a problem for me, but I know it upsets other people. Yesterday, one client called on three separate occasions telling me he was on his way to my office. But he never arrived, and never explained why. He may call again today. Not a problem. Some people charge a cancellation fee, but I don't want to take money from people without serving them. Life can get in the way of anyone's day, and I don't want to penalise anyone for that. I tell all my interns that it's not what we say about ourselves that matters, but what others say about us. That's your reputation, and as the saying goes, a good name is better than gold or silver. This short post reflects the name I want to have and the legacy I want to leave. I also want to acknowledge those interns who have given me feedback and encourage other senior lawyers to also offer internship opportunities to law students and recent graduates. Below are extracts from what two of my recent interns have said about interning with me. Note the long-lasting implications of me spending just a few hours with these young people, and how their confidence, skills and perspectives have changed. Each of my interns sits with me in my office and shadows me all day for the duration of their internship. It's like a road-trip where we get to know each other pretty well as we ride along through the same legal issues and solve clients' problems together in real time. Here's what these two interns wrote to me: Intern 1 - "I've learnt more from you this week that I ever thought I would. You have made my first step into the legal profession so enjoyable. This week went by quickly but I will remember it forever. Thanks to you, I feel 100 times more prepared to begin my legal career than I did a week ago." Intern 2 - "Thank you for taking me as your intern for the week. Both [my fellow intern] and I developed numerous legal skills which we will be able to use in our professional lives. Sharing an office with you, bouncing numerous ideas and helping us with our networking, are things I'll never forget." In reality, I didn't do much different from what I usually do during my work days, serving clients and dealing with the day to day issues that arise when running a legal practice. Yet, the impact on these young people has clearly been significant and potentially life-long. It's also something that any senior lawyer can pass on by creating space in their schedules to model good lawyering to the next generation of legal professionals. A Disturbing trend among #lawstudents I have noticed a quite disturbing trend among lawstudent.s In the past few months, our office at the time of welcoming new interns was apprised that few of the interns don't intend to do any internship for no reason at all and sometimes with the worst reasons. Last week, I heard the selected intern saying that he didn't read the address of our firm, hence he would like to stay in his home (This happened on the first day of his internship - when he was supposed to report to our office). Please see that many firms and lawyers take a lot of pain in selecting interns even for unpaid internship. Hence refusing to perform internship sans any valid reason shall only make a lawstudent unprofessional and create an environment of distrust among legal fraternity towards lawstudents. Ergo, if you have applied and got selected, then do honour your own request #law #lawyers #lawstudents

Experience is priceless but stipend is necessary:Law Student Interns Deserve More Than Just Experience...⚖️ Hey there future lawyers!👨⚖️ So you snagged that coveted internship at a fancy law firm. Congrats!🥳 But hold on, before you dust off your Judge Judy robe (because seriously, who even owns one of those?), let's talk about the not-so-glamorous side of legal internships: the pay, or rather, the lack thereof. We've all heard the spiel: "Internships are about gaining valuable experience!" Experience like, uh, learning the difference between "pro bono" and "broke-o"? Sure, the knowledge you gain is priceless, but let's be honest, it doesn't exactly pay the bills. Look, we get it. Law firms are prestigious places. But come on, even interns deserve a little justice...and maybe a decent sandwich.
