"In #Madagascar, only 30% of children are able to attend pre-school and finish high school." Irinah, TSF Project Coordinator in Madagascar. In the IT CUP Center, hundreds of young people come to access the Internet and use it to do their homework to complete their schooling. Danielson, who is preparing for his final exam, shares: "As the exam for the baccalauréat approaches, I'm studying on the Internet by watching YouTube channels and working on the subjects available online. I've noticed a lot of changes since I've been frequenting the cybercafé, as I've become more skilled. I'm a leader in a scout group and I've been able to bring about a small revolution in our group thanks to the IT CUP Centre. For example, I downloaded YouTube tutorials on arts and crafts, which I used to organize training courses for the young members of our scout group."

Teaching for impact and sustainable change? Have just been asked about materials relating to Sustainable Development Goals. I have recommended looking at the material developed by the two world associations for Guiding and Guiding, WAGGGS and WOSM, in cooperation with FAO. They are know as the YUNGA-UN badges and we have yet to implement this program material in Denmark (note 'yet' - I may pick up this challenge in future). We are talking a lot about crisis preparedness - and I believe we owe to students to develop their capacity to analyse and act when confronted with crisis situations on the ground. 'Crisis' can refer to flooding of the kind we have seen in Central Europe this month. But it can also involve humanitarian crises such as the situation for Syrian refugees in 2015, Ukrainian refugees in 2022 or Palestinian refugees in 2024. Or perhaps a pandemic - a type of crisis familiar to all since 2020. To train crisis preparedness, we developed a dilemma game for the international scout and guide camp Roverway 2024. This tested participants' ability to analyse a crisis situation and make a decision, often based on scarce information, if any at all (this did challenge some participants). This game came out of our conversations in the WAGGGS Europe Crisis Support Team, as well as my interviews with 10 Polish volunteers engaged in 'Ukraine Action'. In two weeks I shall test the game on a group of BA students from Language & International Studies. Because students who aim for a career in international organisations, diplomacy, security or global NGOs need practical experience with decision making in crisis situations. If the experiment works, we may want to develop the game further. Just today I got some inspiration on possible ways of working with scenarios for the future. The crisis game is not available online, but you can access the YUNGA material. This is very good - highlighting important themes relating to sustainability. And it is there for you to use in IB classrooms, Folk High Schools, civil society trainings etc. So let's start thinking and acting for the future :)

There was a glaring skills divide between Kenyan TVET participants and other global participants in the recently concluded World skills competition. Quoting a reporter in a Kenyan news channel "it was soon evident Kenya and other African countries had a lot of catching up to do with the rest of the competitors especially from Asian and European countries". There's this fascinating biblical story about Joshua and his counterparts going to spy the land they were to occupy. Joshua's and Caleb's perspectives were positive, but their counterparts saw giants in the land and equated themselves to grasshoppers. This story ties well with Kenya's lackluster at the competition. TVETs need to decide what to do from here henceforth. It is either we adopt a 'can-do' mentality and engage world leaders to improve our curricula, learning systems and teaching methods, or, recoil and feel sorry for ourselves. We can also opt to continue ignoring global advancements and continue in our stone age technologies. The ball is in our court. Bottom up is the way to go. Growing skills from a young age should be the focus and the Competency Based Curriculum offers a great platform for that to happen. Let's not loose sight of what we can achieve with a positive attitude.
