I'm delighted to announce that our paper titled: "Consensus-based Recommendations for the Implementation of Health Technology Assessment in the United Arab Emirates" has been published online in (Value in Health Regional Issues journal), on behalf of the International Society for Pharmacoeconomics and Outcomes Research (ISPOR). Healthcare research and development has accelerated at an unprecedented rate creating a challenge even for high-income countries to finance all new technologies. Health technology assessment (HTA) aims to maximize health gains out of available resources. We developed the first Emirati consensus-based recommendations for HTA implementation in the UAE. These first Emirati recommendations encompass training graduate and postgraduate on HTA, public funding for HTA appraisals and expanding the scope of HTA to non-pharmaceuticals, establishing central coordination of the HTA bodies, and having an explicit soft cost-effectiveness threshold for common technologies and a higher threshold for orphan drugs. It has been my honor to lead this project, which spanned 2 years until publication, with an incredible team working at different institutions comprising physicians from various specialties, pharmacists, and health economists (both local and international).
