We’re back with the latest post in our #AutomationArchive series! Today, we will explore a pivotal moment in industrial automation history that has shaped the industry as we know it. Before the late 1960s, machine control relied on a complex web of relays, where a single relay failure could halt operations entirely. In 1968, Dick Morley, along with Tom Boissevain, George Schwenk, and Jonas Landau, transformed this process by developing the first Programmable Logic Controller (PLC), the Modicon 084. Originally called the Modular Digital Controller, it required 16 inputs, 16 outputs, and 1 kilobyte of memory. So, what did the Modicon 084 achieve? It marked the beginning of the automation era by replacing bulky relay systems with a single compact unit, dramatically improving efficiency, communication, and energy consumption.
