Working with Owners and Professionals on their businesses operations and supply chain strategy and execution.
Optimising your order quantities is a delicate balancing act. While placing large orders to secure the lowest cost might seem like a smart move, it can create significant challenges both for your business and your vendors. Here’s why ordering in bulk isn’t always the best solution: - Strain on vendors: Increased demand puts pressure on your vendor and in turn, their suppliers. - Storage and space: Larger orders require more warehouse space, putting a strain on your facilities. - Longer lead times: Vendors may face capacity constraints, delaying your orders. - Tied up cash: Bulk orders lock up cash in inventory. - Obsolescence risk: Increased stock means higher risk of product expiry or obsolescence. Looking internally, if your pricing models for customers incentivise bulk orders, it doesn’t just affect cost. It can impact your entire operation . Work centres may be tied up on a single job for weeks, limiting your ability to serve other customers and creating inefficiencies. So, what’s the solution? Smoothing. By smoothing demand and minimising peaks and troughs across your supply chain, you can avoid the pitfalls of bulk ordering. Here’s how: - Understand your true requirements: Work closely with both customers and vendors to understand price elasticity based on order quantities. - Find the optimal balance: Aim for the best price with the right order frequency for each item. This balance will vary across your product range. - Collaborate for success: Ranking your inventory and understanding its unique requirements will allow you to find the sweet spot between order size and operational efficiency. Optimising order quantities isn’t about always buying in bulk—it’s about finding the right balance for your business, your customers, and your supply chain.

Did you know? Inventory Cycle refers to the process of managing and tracking inventory from procurement to sales(Issue in production case). It involves activities like ordering, receiving, storing, and selling(Issue). The inventory cycle consists of several stages. First, there's the procurement stage, where you order or purchase the inventory from suppliers. Then comes the receiving stage, where you physically receive and inspect the inventory. After that, you move on to the storage stage, where you store the inventory in a warehouse or storage facility. The next stage is the sales stage, where you sell the inventory to customers. Finally, there's the replenishment stage, where you restock the inventory to maintain optimal levels. These stages repeat in a continuous cycle to ensure efficient inventory management. The inventory cycle is important for several reasons. It helps businesses maintain the right amount of inventory to meet customer demand without overstocking or running out of stock. By effectively managing the inventory cycle, businesses can optimize cash flow, reduce carrying costs, and minimize the risk of obsolescence. It also enables businesses to track and monitor inventory levels, identify trends, and make informed decisions about procurement, sales, and replenishment. Ultimately, a well-managed inventory cycle can improve customer satisfaction, streamline operations, and contribute to the overall success of a business.
