Such an empowering day yesterday surrounded by fellow thought leaders in sexual healthcare. While explaining the story of how and why we have gender gap in healthcare I shared the lack of research, data, education, female leadership, time with patients as barriers to care. I also shared the lack of funding. While we cannot go back in history, we have the power to write a new story. To the investors out there, you have the power to help write that story by writing checks to female founders in healthcare. Looking forward to rewriting a powerful women’s healthcare story together in 2024.

In #Boston #femalefounders raise <1% of #VC funding, lower than the already low national average of <2%. Boston is 30-50% less friendly or supportive to #womeninentrepreneurship. I think about if I should curate my feed to “sanitize” it of any “politics” to avoid triggering some #investor. What if my saying “as a #pediatrician I care about babies, #humanrights, and rule of law” is a threat to my getting funded? If already the odds are against me, can I not “afford” ethics, authenticity, values, integrity? Thing is, my #startup in #womenshealth is innately political, especially post-#Roe. It is not another wellness app or #wearable only for privileged women, but addresses #healthjustice to include #BIPOC & #WOC. I am all for wearables too. I want to decrease the #digitaldivide to increase access to wearables and #digitalhealth, #personalizedmedicine. So if my authentic values as a #founder and #femalefounder makes mine not a fundable #venture, so be it. If I need to totally abandon my core values to “make it” as an #entrepreneur, then I would rather lose/suppress my voice for a well-paid corporate job with a 401K match, robust healthcare benefits and a wellness plan, and longterm disability benefits. Frankly, I do not believe being pro-justice is not fundable. Our first #angelinvestor found me, not vice versa. The National Science Foundation (NSF) wants us to submit a grant. There *is* a path forward. We have already gotten past certain gates and proven we can deliver consistent results on hard things. We have already de-risked ourselves in certain ways in the last year. Also, there are other paths than just institutional funding. With a compelling story and my grassroots organizing skills, we can be funded by a lot of small checks too. Am I aiming to be in the 0.5% or 0.1% or 0.01%? Yes. I have channeled my deep anger and anguish - at the destruction of American #publichealth and the slide of American women’s health into the Dark Ages and even my mother’s passing of #COVID - towards achieving hard things: like launching a venture to improve the health and well-being of women in America, including WOC, including women like me or like my late mother. A savvy investor knows that I am exactly the founder to fund. I am stubborn, think and act fast, attract good people to my team, and feel this pain - as an American woman and public health expert - personally and deeply.

International Women's Day is a moment to celebrate the incredible strides women have made, both historically and in the present. The recent The White House initiative focusing on women's health is a welcome step, recognizing the importance of affordable and accessible healthcare for all women (1). However, significant challenges remain on the path to true gender equity and inclusion. Issues like access to In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) and the potential overturning of Roe v. Wade highlight the ongoing fight for women's reproductive rights (2). Internationally, women face a multitude of hardships. Period poverty affects millions, denying them basic sanitary hygiene products (3). Early pregnancies often derail educational opportunities, trapping women in a cycle of poverty (4). Intimate partner violence continues to plague women globally, leaving them physically and emotionally scarred, and sinking them further into poverty (5). Maternal mortality rates, especially among Black women in the US, remain unacceptably high, often due to preventable health issues and implicit bias in healthcare systems (6). The corporate world is another arena demanding change. Women continue to struggle for equal footing on the corporate ladder, facing underrepresentation in leadership positions and persistent pay gaps (7). International Women's Day serves as a powerful reminder of the work still needed. We must celebrate the progress made while amplifying the voices of those facing ongoing challenges. Let's use this day to recommit ourselves to building a world where all women, regardless of background or circumstance, have the opportunity to thrive.
