The link between housing instability and mental health is undeniable - homelessness is often a result of mental illness and a cause of it. Anxiety, depression, and trauma are common consequences of homelessness and precarious living conditions. For individuals already managing mental health issues, stable housing is crucial for recovery and accessing essential healthcare. We believe that everyone deserves a place to call home that is affordable, sustainable, safe and secure. Statistics show that homeless children are more likely to develop various physical and mental health-related problems. These in turn have an impact on their likelihood of lacking access to education, accompanied by greater exposure to trauma and instability during their upbringing. At SACH we support clients who are vulnerable due to housing, mental health and addictions. Surrey's last homelessness count showed a 65% increase, however, the report notes that when and how the count happens is not fulsome. “It is important to understand that this methodology will create a result that is an absolute minimum number of people who are experiencing homelessness on the specific day of the count, and this methodology means that those who are not currently accessing services or are easily found will most likely be excluded.” Here is where SACH steps in - we take information to the clients and then support them to navigate their way through the system to get the support they need. This increase not only highlights the growing number of individuals and families without stable housing but also underscores the broader socio-economic challenges that need urgent attention. Addressing this problem requires a multi-faceted approach, including increased funding for affordable housing, better access to mental health services, and addiction services, and comprehensive support systems to help those in need find and maintain stable living conditions. On any given night in Australia, 122,494 people are experiencing homelessness. Having a place to call home is foundational to good mental health and wellbeing. Over the past decade, research has consistently shown that people who have experienced or are experiencing homelessness were more likely to report having experience with mental ill-health and alcohol and other drugs. The Commission works with a broad range of mental health, alcohol and other drugs, housing and homelessness service providers, and people with lived-living experience, to explore ways to better support people to establish and maintain long term housing. This includes advocating for more supportive housing options to ensure Queenslanders experiencing housing distress have a place to call home and the support they need.
